I've been trying to avoid reviving beaten topics but I can't seem to make a decision between the 852s NRX & GLX. Granted the $80 dollar difference isn't horribly great but knowing if there's a great difference in rods is the question we all ask (Non-owners of either rod). However, just curious on your opinions (owners of the rods) is there truly that great of a difference at only an $80 jump? Lastly, I can pick up the GLX now, on sale for 250, or do I pass and get the NRX?

***Both rods are most recent versions.

depends on what you are using the rod for, if its bottom contact where sensitivity is key get the nrx. if not, get the glx and save some money

I would take a GLX for $250 all day every day over most any other rod at full msrp.

Are you seriously saying the GLX, what was formally G.Loomis' top of the line blank, not sensitive?

Get the GLX, it's a no brainer at that price.  The gains in the NRX will not offset the cost difference.

44% off of a current edition GLX is a steal. I have the NRX version of the 852s and love it but would still pick up the GLX version today with that deal since it's such a versatile rod. NRX and Conquests are great rods, but the GLX's I have aren't that far behind.

If i were in that position I would also get the GLX, which is a better bang for the buck; however, the NRX is probably a nicer rod (it is on paper). I have never used either rod, only handled them in store.

The new GLX rods are much improved over the prior generation but still a great rod. Make sure it's the new edition if so definitely get the GLX.

I've used both for fishing.  The difference is not going to cost anyone fish.

When you say on sale are you talking about on a buy/sell forum so second hand or from a dealer. Only possibly issue would be warranty. Not 100% sure if buying a GLX second hand, you would have warranty coverage should you need it where as if you buy a NRX new from an authorized dealer you obviously would. However like Jay said the GLX for $250 would be hard to pass off. The differences in the rods would be likely pretty minor. Perhaps a shade less feel, a bit more weight, and the blank/taper being a bit different.

I have the NRX 852s spinning rod. If you have any specific questions about that model I would be happy to provide what insight I could. No experience with that model from the new GLX lineup though I have a rod from that line up (GLX MBR 844).

Stephen

What makes the new GLX so much more improved over the prior generation??

The new GLX are 20% lighter, balance much better, increased handle length which helped the balance points. Overall they fish much better in my opinion than the previous GLX. A lot of small things they did with the handle and reel seat to improve the rod aesthetically and in terms of overall feel. G Loomis definitely spent a lot of time perfecting the GLX. In terms of balance it balances better than the NRX but sensitivity is not quite as good as the NRX but still very impressive.

No problem. I see you are from the SW Florida. I am taking a trip down to Jupiter and going to try to fish the Big O. Weather looks like its been storming everyday all day. How's the Big O been fishing?

Typical summer weather down here.

Overall it's been fishing great depending on where and when you go.

Let me know a few days before you come and where you're gonna launch from and I'll try to point you in the right direction.

The rod is new w/ tags from a reputable dealer.

Thanks everyone for your great input... @J Francho 's advice. Ordered the GLX but will be on the look out for an NRX at a lower cost!

You have made the correct choice. Buy without worry and fear of regret.

I have bought a NRX 803c JWR, but after handling it, I wasn't impressed. In my mind, I was expecting the NRX to be out of this world good, but to me, it was just another rod. The build quality was terrible especially for a $500+ rod. Cheaper Avid's have a better build quality than the NRX imo. They use cheap cork on a $500+ rod. To me that is unacceptable.

I also didn't think the NRX was that sensitive neither. I've had cheaper rods that are arguably more sensitive than an NRX. Take this with a grain of salt, as most people will disagree with me.

I ended up returning the NRX even though it cost me $40 for return shipping. I just couldn't do it. It didn't sit with me well that I paid a lot of money for a rod that I thought was subpar.

I also handled a NRX 853c JWR and 802c JWR, again nothing to write home about.

I own the new GLX MBR series. I have the 842c, 843c, and 844c. These rods are phenomenal! I was truly blown away by these rods. The build quality on these rods are awesome. They use premium cork on these rod unlike the NRX. And in my hands, the new GLX has superior sensitivity and balance over the NRX. Again, many will disagree with me, but that's just my personal opinion.
