Happybeerbuzz Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 What do you throw quarter ounce poppers on? Spinning or baitcasting? Line type and weight? Quote
Junger Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 Caught most of my LMB this morning on a 1/4oz Lightning Shad Rico. I threw it on a Daiwa Tatula 6'9 ML/R on 12lb mono. The rod is rated for 1/4oz, but it I'd say it barely managed it. It doesn't load it well, but I got good distance out of it with a Tatula CT-Type R with a very loose tension knob and high brakes and thumbed the spool before hitting the water or it would backlash. I'll probably prefer a 6'6 ML casting rod that can handle 1/4-1/2oz poppers with a shorter butt than the Daiwa. Anything lighter than 1/4oz (I love to throw the Rebel Teeny PopR), I use a spinning rod that can handle 1/16oz lures, which is a Cabela's XML 6' L/F with a Daiwa BG1500 and 8lb braid. 1 Quote
Quarry Man Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 i prefer using spinning reels and straight braid or a mono leader. 1 Quote

Happybeerbuzz Posted June 3, 2018 Author Posted June 3, 2018 My initial feeling is that 1/4 ounce is too light for casting gear even though many casting rods have 1/4 ounce as their lower limit. Typically, 3/8 of an ounce is where I feel comfortable with casting gear, but maybe I just need to practice more. Quote
Smallieseeker Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 I throw them on a Dobyns Sierra 682 casting with a tatula sv. Works good I never had a problem casting them but there is nothing wrong with using a spinning set up either. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 3, 2018 Super User Posted June 3, 2018 Spinning reel on a 6'6" med/fast rod. Line is 10 pound mono. Quote

What do you feel is the sweet spot on the 682? How heavy can it truly go? I have a DX 2 power and it's my understanding the Sierra while being a 2 is slightly heavier Quote

Any lighter or heavier I just use a different set up. I have actually heard the opposite. I’ve read that the Sierra is just a little bit softer than the champ and the champ extremes. I can’t say for sure tho bc my only experience with the champion extreme casting rods was a 4 power. 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 3, 2018 Super User Posted June 3, 2018 My outfit of choice would be hard to source but well worth it. Rod - Shimano Cumulus 6'10 MH (Note this is the most over rated rod... it is more of a medium at best) - Reel - Daiwa SV 105 Line - #8 Yozuri hybrid Why this outfit? The outfit weighs next to nothing thanks to the 3 oz rod. This make it much less tough in the fatigue dept to work poppers in jerkbaits. The reel is a what I call a mag finesse reel that is great at throwing this size of bait. The line is small enough in diameter, floats pretty well and is very strong with a breaking point much higher than most 8# lines. Quote
Junger Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 This thread has got me on a search for a better casting rod to handle 1/4oz poppers, which to me are standard size. I love the tip and bend of the Daiwa Tatula 6'10 ML/R, but the butt to reel is about 12" and I wish it was closer to 10". Since it's a monsoon outside, I've been couped up on my computer doing a lot of looking around and I ordered two rods to compare. The KastKing Speed Demon Bass casting rod, and the Wright & McGill Skeet Reese Tournament casting rod, both are 6'8 medium power, fast action rods rated for 1/8 to 1/2 oz lures. I could not find any info on the length of the handle however. I really love the "regular" flex of the Tatula rod, which is more like a moderate fast flex...but the Eagleclaw website shows the Skeet Reese rod as a medium flex rod, not fast. I'm hopeful the tip is not that fast, and close to the Tatula regular flex. However I'm hesitant on the double trigger grip on the Skeet Reese rods, I do like to work my popper with my wrist and palm the reel so my hand is higher up on the handle, so maybe it'll work out. But that's why I got the KastKing as well, to see if the rod action is similar with a normal trigger grip. If it all works out, one of these will be my popper rod for 1/4-1/2oz lures, otherwise it'll be back to the drawing board, or I'll be in the market for a custom rod. Quote
