I have a pflueger president xt 30 with a medium action 7' Shakespeare 2 piece rod. I want to dedicate this set up for finesse and soft plastics etc.

What kind of line? Leader or no leader?

Sunline Super Natural mono in 6 or 8 lb test, 330 yds is $7 or Maxima Ultra Green 5 lb copolymer line, 280 yds is $11.

I use 6lb. mono for most of my finesse fishing.  When I do use braid, I tie direct using either 15lb. or 20lb. (4-6lb. mono diameter).  I like to keep things simple.

Regardless, I'd go with a braided mainline and a leader.

This way, say you use a 10 or 15# braid, you can tie

any pound leader from 4-15 depending on technique.

I like to use 6-8# leaders. Works for a lot of finesse

applications, and if you want to go for something a bit

heavier, tie on a 10-15# leader...

I use nothing but 14 pound Berkley original FireLine and a leader made of 6 or 8 pound green colored P Line CXX on all of my spinning reels. That includes the ones I use in deep clear lakes.

That combo has never let me down or cost me bites.  Many of the spinning rods my wife and I use have Pflueger Presidents or Supreme reels on them.  I always spool my reels half way up with Stren 14 original mono for backing. that allows me to fill two reels with one spool of braid.

I use 2  spinning setups.

for finesse baits like a ned rig or wacky rig, I use straight 8lb. trilene xl.

these baits are usually fairly short casts and I like the shock resisting stretch of straight mono.

for soft plastics on a slider or shakyhead, I use 10lb power pro braid with an 8lb. flourocarbon  leader.

shakyheads and sliders are usually longer casts and I like the sensitivity of braid.

all other baits, I use a baitcaster.

In with weedwacker and WRB. I like mono for finesse, sunline or maxima. 6 or 8lb test.

Umm, given what we know, which isn't a lot, I'll change my decision. I have a Deep South Elite Tubes 6'6 M with a Lews 300 on it loaded with 15lb Superpower and an 8lb Red Label leader. I use it for sub 1/2oz baits on a TRig, walking baits, small buzzbaits and Pond Magic baits. It works well and is super sensitive. The Superpower braid is great for the price, but I want to try some of their 8 carrier line.

Stick with mono, or fluoro as a mainline if you want, but the fact of the matter is...it's an antiquated grandpa way to fish with spinning gear. Most pros now have seen the light I saw 10+ years ago and use braid main line with a fluoro leader. And before any one hollers "but muh knot on the braid to leader is a weak point !!!" That tells me a couple things, #1 you have never used this system, as the knot is a non-issue OR, you have used this system, and you can't tie knots correctly..................either way...................stay in your lane pops.
