Just caught this on a zoom lizard. What would you say it weighs? My guess was about 7 pounds when I had it out of water. It looks shorter than it really was because of the downward camera angle...

Yeah, just using the picture that's what I would say. You can tell that the camera is angled downwards a bit though. That seems to make them look shorter. ;)

A good estimate from a photo is very difficult at best especially without a length measurement. I'm curious. If you want to know how much your fish weigh, why don't you carry a scale?

I used to have one of those scales with the hook on it that goes through their gills, but it broke. I haven't bought one since because I read that both the lip clip kind, and the hook kind can injure them, and even kill them sometimes. Is that true?

It won't do anymore damage than holding a big fish the way you are in your picture. By hanging heavy fish in a vertical position, the weight of their internal organs can cause internal damage. You should try supporting the back of the fish to a more horizontal position.

Huh, I'll keep that in mind.

Not big enough to bother wondering how much it weights.

Unless you are Andre the Giant your fist should be able to fit in a 5lb fish's mouth pretty easily. Out of the zillions of fish I've caught and handled for other people in that weight range it's always accurate, northern and Florida strain. Unless you are a giant human your fairly average size fist isn't fitting into that bass' mouth. If that is the case you're looking around 4lbs.

Well I didn't try to put my fist in it's mouth, but I'm pretty sure it could. ? Also, I noticed that you live in Madison County Alabama. That's where I live too.
