12 lb mono or 3o lb braid will be the most versatile. if you fish clear water go with the mono, if you fish stained water use braid. if you fish heavy cover use braid. if you fish open water use mono. if you fish any combination of the to, use braid with a mono leader.

Welcome to BR

30lb. is a good place to start, unless you're fishing frogs or swimbaits. Then I'd recommend bumping it up a bit.  If there are zebra muscles or shell beds, I wouldn't be concerned with braid fraying.  It takes a lot of fraying to significantly reduce the strength of braid. It does cut easily and that's why I mentioned the muscles and shell beds. If you want to use it under those conditions, I'd add a mono or fluoro leader.

Another observation on using braid.  Braid often digs into to itself on the baitcasting reels.  I found out that heavier braid does not dig into itself as often as lighter braid.  For fishing plastics in weedy waters I will use 50 pound braid just because it gives me less problems on the reel, not that I need that pound strength.  It has all but eliminated the digging in after catching a bass, or snagged on weed, or wood.  In weedy conditions, the heavier line is not a hindrance to shy bass.  It also does a great job cutting through pad stems.  Open water I will use Floro instead of braid with plastics.  Good stuff for the right conditions, it does take a toll of reel parts, especially reel gears.  When you set the hook with braid it is a rock solid jolt!

Im using an abu garcia vengeance rod and reel combo. The reel is a ultra max baitcaster. Im a beginner at this hobby so whatever is best to start im down to try.

I would use 40 lb. It sounds like a lot, but 40 lb braid is the diameter of 10 pound test mono.

Honestly, I use 30lb gray Superpower on my MH. I normally fish weedlines and edges, seldom slop, but I'm going to give that a go this summer. I have 10lb Hybrid on my M casting rods and 15lb green Superpower on one spinning rod (probably grabbing some yellow or putting Nanofil on it too), 6'6 M and 12lb Nanofil on my 6'6 ML.

I use 20# on my baitcaster, but I'd second those who suggest

30. Would be easier. The stuff is so darn strong. If you feel

better matching the diameter of braid to mono, then go for

it. I've used heavier, but with experience, I'm perfectly fine

using 20#.
