Estimate the weight

Just landed my second biggest bass. Hooked it under a sunken tree. I almost had a heart attack when it suddenly dawned on me that it was in the middle of a tree... (especially since it felt like a car on the end of the line) Anyways, I got a quick picture before releasing it. What would you say it weighs? And trust me, the picture doesn't do him justice.

Congratulations on catching your second biggest bass. It would be best to bring a scale with you to know how much a bass truly weighs or ar least bring a tape measure to measure it's length and girth for a estimated weight.

Thanks. I'm looking into one of those lip clip scales. I used to have one but it broke.

You are welcome. You can also cut a piece of fishing line to measure the length and girth of a bass. The following formula is very accurate in estimating a weight of a bass=

Length×Length×Girth÷1200= estimated weight of a bass.

For example;

26.5*26.5*18÷1200=10.53 pounds.

Its off by a couple ounces but it's better than nothing.

Don’t get a lip clip scale please, they can tear the fishes jaw and cause more damage. I’d suggest getting one with the hook that slides into the gills.

I assumed the lip clip would be less harmful. Can't the hook kind damage their gills?

Not if you don’t hook it by the actual gills, just the gill covers. I’ve just seen before where the clip kind tears through the mouth and causes bleeding which is nearly a death sentence for bass.

Yeah. I estimated about 5.5 pounds when I was holding it up, but that picture just makes it so hard to tell. It looks like anything from 2 to 7 because of the angle.

Do you think it is bigger than this one? I estimated mine around 4lb ish.

It' too hard to tell from the photo. But it does look like a nice one. I kayak fish and all my fish photos are the 1 handed stretch my arm shots also. I try to at least get the whole fish into them but still it's hard to guess the weight. I bought a cheap scale on Amazon to cure my curiosity. I only weight the bigger ones carefulply. I do sometimes just play the guessing game on the first one just see if my hand eye coordination is working. Getting a lot better at it once I've weighed some out.

 

Here's a couple of photos of a Bass I caught before I bought my scale. The bucket is 14" tall and the Bass is touching the ground while it's side is touching the bucket. If the angle was a little more straight on it would be easier to guess the length at least. I'm thinking it was around 21"-22" long. 

 

Viewing the photos one would think the one next to the bucket is a bigger fish as the lighting and angle is off just enough to make it look like two different Bass. Same fish. The bucket was just to carry my stuff. I throw them all back.

Hard to say exactly, but I would guess around 3" longer than that one. Otherwise about the same.

Looks to be Maybe a 3lber to me. Usually whatever a fisherman estimates a fish at its 1-2 pounds less.

Yeah, it just seemed bigger than 3 in real life. The picture just makes it so hard to tell. use the clip on scale, and i would guess 3-4 lbs, but that is an estimate and didn't catch the fish so i could very well be wrong. it is too hard to tell exactly from the photo as there is no object of known length within the photo.

i would pass on the hook scale. it doesnt really work good on larger fish. all they have to do is flop or wiggle around one time and they will easily fall off that hook. in Major League Fishing thats considered worse than the clip on scales they use. last year i got a scale thats a knockoff boga grip, it hasnt damaged any fishes mouths. never tried the clip on type myself, but i cant imagine they will damage every fish you use them on or even a majority. they may never cause damage to a fish.
