EGbassing Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I'm currently tying leaders for saltwater use, (leaving for Florida in a few days) but every time I try to tie the line to a barrel swivel, it ends up with a bunch of small coils in it just above the knot. I'm using mono line, and I've tried the improved clinch knot, palomar, trilene, etc. but they all do it. I heard that wetting the line eliminates this problem, but it doesn't seem to help. (I've even tried tying it underwater...) Am I doing something wrong? I've probably tried to tie on that barrel swivel 100 times now... Quote

Sounds like you might be getting the knot really tight too high up then the cinch down causes the line coils. Try tying it a little loose and gently work it down as you slowly tighten the knot to the swivel eye. Unless you've already done this and it didn't help. 3 Quote

Well, I just tried it and it didn't completely eliminate the problem, but definitely helped a lot. I'll try to tie it even looser this time and see if that works. Edit: It worked... Thanks again. 2 Quote

This happens to me especially when trying leaders with 40-80lb mono. I just deal with it and I haven't broken off a fish because of it. Quote

Apparently it's stronger, and it seems to be nearly impossible to burn the line when tying it. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 31, 2018 Super User Posted May 31, 2018 Heavy mono the San Diego jam knot works good or a Palomar is easy to tie. Clip a weight onto the swivel, makes allot easier to tie knots. Tom Quote

I actually use the uni knot and palomar for most terminal knots, even in saltwater. But excellent you found one that works well for you. Quote

I usually use the palomar for braid, and the uni knot for small diameter line. (don't know why...) Quote
