iminsanenutz Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 i have a 10 foot aluminum john boat. got it for free, patched a decent whole and a few other leaks. since i fixed it i realy got back into fishing so next year id liketo register it and use it.. id like to put 2 seats in it but i was wondering, how exactly would i fasten them. arent the floatation foam (or whatever) in the seats? so im just wondering and dont wanna mess anything up trying to rig something up. also wasnt sure about center of gravity issues. plan on having a trolling motor with 2 battiers out back. any help will be greatly appreciated. w4svc Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 wal-mart has an seat attchment that sits on the john seat and bars that close on the front and back of the john seat. I would not rase the seat more than the the few inches the attchment has. You'll find the boat very unstable. I think the price is about 11.95 each. Bas pro and cabellas should have the same thing but better quality Quote
Fishin-Psyantist Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 I have a 12 ft jon boat (well actually its 11' 9"). Im considering the same thing you are. I think Im going to put a 3\4 inch plywood floor in the boat and mount the 2 foot risers and the seat to that. The built in bench in the rear of the boat is too close to the rear IMO. Mounting a seat on the floorboard just in front of it will work well for me so when I swivel around to fish from the rear I have a nice foot rest and table. Im currently using a metal folding chair. The built in bench sits too low and gets very uncomfortable. It is suprisingly stable. Somewhere in the boating section of this website is a picture of an office chair with the wheels removed mounted to the floorboard. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 In a 10' jon, you bolt or screw directly to the bench with the swivel. Do not add a pedestal. Even tight on the bench it is very tippy with 2 people. Either cut out a hole in the side of the seat and dig out enough foam to get your hand behind the bolts so you can get the nut on or use a wide bite screws and add some 3m 5200 to the threads. However, Slide mounts and grip mounts are recommended highly for 10's (makes seats removable and are easier to mount.) Quote
James Heddon Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Something else to consider. YOU plus two batteries in the back are going to make your boat ride "bow high". You might want to do what I did, replace your trolling motor cable with one 10 to 12 feet long, and put your batteries as far forward as possible. Just a thought. Quote

surfer Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Somewhere in the boating section of this website is a picture of an office chair with the wheels removed mounted to the floorboard. That was me. I am very pleased with how this set up works. I am 5'10" and the guy I fish with is 6'1". Taking the bench seats out and putting one solid piece of ply wood as the floor gives more room in the boat. The chairs are not mounted to the floor, they only sit on the floor and can be moved about as needed. The biggest down side is there is no longer any flotation in the boat. We do not go across the middle of lakes because of this. His wife fishes with him too and likes the comfort of the office chairs. farmpond1 Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Ten feet is mighty small for a boat. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but attention must be placed on weight limitations, center of gravity, etc. You probably shouldn't mount the seats too high otherwise you (and your fishing buddy) might go swimming when you lean back too far. Do you really need two batteries? Can you get by with one? Two batteries and two people (unless you are lightweights) and any gear you bring is going to make things pretty heavy. Just some things to consider. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Lightweights or not, DO NOT use a pedestal. You'll see how tippy it is even without them. WITH them,.....you're goin' swimmin' Quote
Guest muddy Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 DO NOT USE ANY PEDESTAL, it will turn a 10 footer into a diving platform! Good solution: Cut a 3/4 inch thick piece of ply wood the exact size of the seat and screw/bolt it on Before you put the wood onto the seat bolt the swivel to that board. Now screw the wood onto the seat, . We used 6 screws , in each corner and in the middle of each seat.Attach the seat to the Swivel. We had no pull off or bolts backing out for 2 whole seasons that way!!!!!! PS I would paint the wood, if not it will rot. Quote
