Beetlebz Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 I just wanted to share. I haven't caught anything on a jig aside from swim jigs and chatterbaits. Thing is it's easily my favorite bait to throw. All spring long I flipped till I can't see straight... not a single bite. UNTIL TODAY! Flipping hard cover and edges of emergent grass in a foot of water give or take. Bottom comp didn't seem to matter, sparse vegetation. Hot, almost no wind, sparse cloud cover. THUMP! Not alot of bites, but they were all north of 2lbs so it could always be worse! Made me a happy boy. Jewel 3/8 flippin jig, PB&J with a catch co wreckin craw bit down. 8 Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 Glad you found the jig bite. I haven't lost any lately Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 29, 2018 Super User Posted May 29, 2018 Sometimes it's just like that. Some days, bass will just pick it up and swim around with it. I'm no jig expert either, but I know a way you can increase your bites. I rig a plain 3/16 oz. weedless black Arky jighead with a Berkley Chigger Craw-any craw will suffice really, I just love this one because fish will hold onto it a long time. I get some bites on this bait almost every time out and big fish will smash it as well. It will do wonders for your jig confidence and give you good practice. And the craw will last a lot longer on a jighead than it will T rigged. The Yamamoto Hula Grub is another great bait for this rig but fish will yank the curly tails off it more easily. 1 Quote
Beetlebz Posted May 29, 2018 Author Posted May 29, 2018 I often throw finesse jigs, but only if I'm not getting bit on full bodied jigs. I never considered skirtless jigs with craws... a finesse finesse jig ? I got an order I gotta make from TSD this week, I gotta add some more craws and some arky heads. Good suggestion! Thanks 1 Quote
Beetlebz Posted June 1, 2018 Author Posted June 1, 2018 Update... I incorrectly said i was using the wreckin craw. In fact it was the SAW craw and I just ordered 5 more bags. Crushed them again today on the jig! Easily my favorite bite of the year. Quote
jamey1e Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Love getting on a good jig bite. I'm stubborn and most of the time refuse to put the jig down knowing other baits will get more bites. However I know what happens once you get the jig bite figured out. IMHO there's no other bait that produces the quality a jig will! Quote
Airman4754 Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 I don't flip much, but dragging a football around is about as good as it gets. Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 I’m in the same boat, I couldn’t get a single jig bite so I never fished them but this spring I picked them up again and I have been slamming them. I don’t know what it is about jigs but that moment when you feel something hit it and run to the side and you set the hook like it’s a world record fish is just one of the best things. Quote
Beetlebz Posted June 4, 2018 Author Posted June 4, 2018 Couple new jigs and trailers should be on my door step when I get home... I have a meeting in the morning which means I'll be hitting the watering hole as the sun gets high... should be flippin city in as deep a cover as I can find. Can't wait! Quote
B_Rose12 Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 Since my first bite on a jig I always have one tied on! My favorite is the 3/8oz Strike King Hack Attack Heavy Cover jig, the way its designed it comes through heavy cover like no other jig I’ve used. I normally go with a rage craw or a netbait paca craw as a trailer. Another thing I do is change the skirts out quite a bit, my local tackle store carries Big Mouth Lures gear, which is also local, and they have dozens of skirts. The hot one for my right now is very, very similar to the one that bass slammed in your pic, I slay em with a Netbait “Alabama Craw” Paca Craw Quote
Super User JustJames Posted June 6, 2018 Super User Posted June 6, 2018 good job man. I too had not fish with jig very often until last Sunday and caught one good size. I pledge to myself to catch at least 10 bass with jig until I pickup other lures (except at night or where I know I'd loose that jig quick. Quote
dandaman Posted April 5, 2024 Posted April 5, 2024 Learning to detect a jig bite from the bank using a spinning rod took me literally 6 months of fishing it every time out. I dedicated at least 15 or 20 minutes every time I went out (2/3xweek) for 6 months...with ZERO RESULTS...GOOSEEGGS. discouraging, tried different weights/color combo trailer combo...and one day I got rewarded for my patience. First one I caught I only realized because I saw my line swim off so I just set the hook and I was bummed because I didn't feel it and it didn't grow my confidence in the bait...but then I caught fire and nailed 10 bass in about 20 casts into the corner of this highway lake I was fishing. *90% of my catches were on the drop as it literally hits the water...close ur reel if SPINNING SETUP fast and WATCH YOUR LINE *** THIS ONE TIP BTW WILL INCREASE YOUR CATCH RATE IN A SHOCKINGLY EMBARASSING TYPE WAY...YOU WILL WONDER HOW MANY FISH YOU HAVE LOST OVER THE YEARS. LOL. I digress, when I caught fire that day I had never had a day or experience like that catching 10 bass in 20 casts...it was every other frickin cast...Cast, boom, I'd feel a thump, and LET EM TAKE IT, then setting the hook it CRUCIAL cuz you have to bury that weedguard fatty hook in them. One other post I saw was the same experience I have with a jig... **After the initial cast, drop of the jig and maybe a bounce or 2...I'd say get it back in and cast again** this can't be understated...I think I myself waste time trying to bounce it and "feel" the bottom...the jig bite is just weird...IT WILL TEACH YOU PATIENCE AND THE IMPORTANCE of watching your line. The hogs I've caught have mostly just hit the jig on the fall or maybe after first bounce...and they just feel like a snag to me as you go to bounce/hop the bait and your pole is like NOPE and rod tip goes down and line goes left or right...then you have that instant of satisfaction as you know a slob just hit your jig and then you set the hook. Once you get good/better with the jig n pig you realize it does just catch more quality bass...it for sure at least for me doesn't catch #s but I'd rather catch 5 3-5lb fish as opposed to 15 1-2lb fish. I've caught my PB 5.73lb bass on it and it's a challenge to learn it, but once you do, you won't ever wanna throw a Yexas rigged worm again. Lol Quote
