Dangerfield Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 What do you ladies/gents do with your gear after use? Do you rinse your reels, or just wipe them down and dry off? Take em off the rods and store them? What do you do with your lures? Rinse, dry off or throw in the bag and pack it in? I clean off any debris and dry off my reels and rods. Store my rods with a sleeve and leave the reels on, no glove. My lures I never leave in the sun even when on the boat for a day of fishing. I just wanted some insight on your general habits and practice, especially from the guys with more experience. I just bought new gear and want to keep everything in working order and looking new. Super User A-Jay Posted May 28, 2018 Super User Posted May 28, 2018 Unless my rigs get rained on or somehow otherwise wet, they are stored in rod socks ready for the next trip. If & when they need it, they'll get wiped off prior to storage. A Micro fiber rag & with a very light mist of Lucas interior cleaner works for me. Boat & motor gets a wipe down after each use. Global Moderator Mike L Posted May 28, 2018 Global Moderator Posted May 28, 2018 I take plastics off the hook, wipe any excess water off the rod and reel, back off drag, put rod sock on and go home. Mike Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 28, 2018 Super User Posted May 28, 2018 My rods won't go in and out of my rod locker without socks so I use them. I don't wipe down anything. I hook what ever bait is on the rod in the bait keeper, put on the sock, put them in the rod locker and go home. I usually have 6-10 setups out so I'm not taking the time to wipe all that down before I stow them. I've been doing it this way for a very long time without issues. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 Back off drag and put on rod and reel covers and place gear in rod rack (They have to travel in the back of my truck since the boat is kept in the state park storage yard). Since the Potomac can be filthy, the next day I spray the spools with KVD, run a pipe cleaner through the line pawls and possibly line guides. Maybe retie depending on how much I fought the grass while out. So goes Potomac fishing. Quote
Dangerfield Posted May 29, 2018 Author Posted May 29, 2018 thanks for the input, much appreciated. I was told to back off the spool tension knob as well to not create a flat spot. Have any of you heard of that? Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted May 29, 2018 Super User Posted May 29, 2018 I store my boat in the garage. I open my tackle box and lay out any crankbaits or spinnerbaits I used and let them dry out. I leave soft plastics and jigs on the rods. I put my rods and reels in rod socks and take them to the basement to store in a rod rack until the next trip. I back off the drags and spool tension knobs on all of them. I will check my line for bad spots and cut off and retie as needed. Usually cut off about 5 to 10 feet of line most of the time. Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted May 31, 2018 Super User Posted May 31, 2018 Back off drag settings, give rods and reels a quick wipe down if need be. I always store them out of sunlight. Quote
