Dtrombly Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 That's tough... If it were me I'd get an Abu Garcia Blackmax $50.. Daiwa Aird X rod $55.. that would make a pretty sweet combo at just a hair above $100. 1 1 Quote

Super User eyedabassman Posted May 28, 2018 Super User Posted May 28, 2018 Just don’t buy any Bass Pro brands, they are junk! Any Lew’s is a good reel! I was just at the Lews store in Springfeild Mo. And they have reconditioned baitcasters and spinning reels at great prices! From $ 39 bucks to $69 . American hero and speed spools, Mach. Ones, - call them they may ship them ! But they have no box! Great combo’s on sale too! 1 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted May 28, 2018 Super User Posted May 28, 2018 Only $65 right now. Hard to beat for a combo. I'd get the 7' med/heavy. https://www.cabelas.com/product/fishing/rod-reel-combos/casting-combos/pc/104793480/c/104762880/sc/104822280/abu-garcia-silver-max-silver-max-cast-cmbo/2171832.uts?slotId=2 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted May 28, 2018 Super User Posted May 28, 2018 My first baitcaster was a Lew's American Hero and for the price it was a great combo. I got it on sale at Dick's plus I had $10 in points to redeem and that made the deal even sweeter. In my opinion, the sensitivity of the rod was very good. Whether it was the slight tick-tick of a fish or bumping structure the vibration transferred well. I'm not one of those folks with a specific rod and reel for every bait and purpose and for me this one worked well as an all around combo. What I really liked is that it was easy for me to dial it in and hook sets were rock solid and predictable. Recently I upgraded to a Lew's Mach II SLP combo and while the reel is a noticeable upgrade over the American Hero I still don't have the new combo dialed in like my old one. Hook sets with my new rod feel mushy no matter where I set the drag. Maybe it's that or my 5'7" frame trying to leverage a 7' rod. Anyway, even with the new combo I still throw the American Hero - my comfort combo - from time to time. I'm sure there are other great combos out there under $100 that are as good or better than the American Hero. But it is a combo that I have enjoyed using and one that I trust out there on the water. 1 Quote
BubbaBassin’ Posted May 28, 2018 Author Posted May 28, 2018 I’m definitely considering the blackmax and the American Hero. Mainly due to pricing and the availability.(I live ten minutes from walmart, where both are sold). I greatly appreciate the responses! 1 Quote
Drew03cmc Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 Look at Kastking. I have a Spartacus Plus on a 6'6" M Daiwa Aird-X. It's a sweet little combo. Also, a Stealth on a Vengeance 6'6" MH. It's really simple to make a decent $100 combo now. 1 Quote

I own a couple of Basspro Rods that have performed very well...broke the tip on another in the past solely due to my error not the rod...last time I was on Basspro Lews was very prominent with its products...and highlighted... Where I come from to bad mouth another man's fishing equipment is fighting words... good fishing... Quote
Beetlebz Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I'd scrounge eBay for a daiwa fuego CT. You should be able to get that reel and a lightning rod shock / fuego / aird rod with the current 15% off eBay code. If you shop around a little you can easily come up with a decent combo for $100 that you won't outgrow in 1 season. Quote
Mbirdsley Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 Two months ago I bought my first bait caster and it was a black maxx combo from Walmart for 69.99. For casting cranks and spoons it is in my mind the best bang for your buck. my combo came with a 6'6ft medium weight what I think is a medium action rod. it was worked very well for me and so far no complaints. mbtharp1 Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 You can get a diawa fuego ct for $69 on eBay, and get a berkley lightning rod for cheap. I think the fuego is a much better reel than the blackmax and silvermax. 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted May 28, 2018 Global Moderator Posted May 28, 2018 Blackmax has been a staple in my arsenal. The promax is a great choice too but you're pushing the budget, I'm not the biggest fan of the silvermax. Quote

Beetlebz Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 Owned the blackmax, silvermax and orra sx. The orra sx combo (not sure what it was replaced with) only retailed for $90. The orra is the only one that made it more than one or two seasons without a serious breakdown, in fact it's still going strong. Sadly there are a bunch of other reels out there that out class it in features though. I just can't recommend them for the money. Quote

But I have had bad experience with bass pro reels like the Rick Clunn , and the PQ spinning reels! 1 Quote
