My biggest is the people  who back down the ramp and they are not prepared to launch . They get out ,   unhook the transom straps  , remove the motor brace , dig out the life jackets , put sun screen on little ones ....on Memorial day weekend with a dozen boats waiting and then the next person repeats it .

Yes.  This drives me crazy.

Also the people who back right down the middle of a ramp that is large enough to launch two boats simultaneously.

Friends not rinsing the anchor before bringing it in the boat.  They just slap this huge ball of mud right onto the deck.

Jet-skis

I see people all the time around here in the late evening or even after dark who won't put their running lights in on their boats. Not only dangerous to those lazy idiots, but to all the others out on the water too, which is the real bad part.

I don't like those people who think its a great idea to be under the influence of a drug ( such as alcohol) when fishing and I stay far away from them once I realize they have a substance abuse problem.

1. Ramp hogs

2. Jet skis or ski boats who get so close they send waves over your bow while you are fishing. (stay away you have a whole lake)

3. People who try to launch or load their boat without getting the trailer tires wet, (just back it in, idiot), it won't jump on and off of the trailer!

4. People who take up several spots at the trailer parking area because they suck at driving.

5. Idiots in general.

My feelings on this have evolved considerably over the years.  I used to be the azzwipe that actually called out 'apparently able-bodied' people parking in handicapped spots, I'm ashamed to admit.

First, thanks to all who have commented on this pet peeve topic. Makes me feel a whole lot better knowing there are folks out there who actually take the time to think about us in the "blue wheels" (color of most handicapped placards/signs) division of life.

Choporoz- I tip my well worn RAM hat to you for your honesty about the attitude so many folks have about those of us who may look able bodied, but in fact have an "invisible disability". Sorry that your dad was unwell, but I thank him for the lesson he taught you, and that you have shared here for others to consider.

With respect...

Lol, what? You don't have a "substance abuse problem" simply because you have a cooler of beer while you're fishing. We call that normal and relaxing. Get a grip.

Seriously, I have never heard anyone pronounce it poe-tay-toe, except Richard Pryor doing it in a comedy routine once.

One of my pet peeves was my wife giving my mom a hard time for not pronouncing words the way she would . My mom grew up in a very small town in N. Carolina, and said Antee -beeotics instead of Anti-biotics.She also said " I reckon " a lot , and my wife would occasionally say it, in a mocking kind of way. But my wife , who has West Virginia and Virginia roots would say " all's " instead of " all " , and any woman she didn't like was a " wench ". But she never got any grief from me about it, you can be sure !

For fishing it has to be boaters than run over my lines when I'm pier fishing in saltwater. I don't do it much anymore for that very reason. They will run right over your lines less than 50 feet away and look surprised when they see me waving my arms and hear me yelling ( no, I don't flip them off )

Other than that, my biggest pet peeve is bad drivers. ( See my road rage thread from last year )

Sounds like she grew up in England. I'm (obviously) from the south and I say "reckon" a lot. I'm hanging on to it because it really is a proper word, unlike y'all or y'uns.

I don't call that normal and relaxing....and don't want to be on the water with people that are under the influence.

I may be overreacting on this one, but I get a bit squeamish and uncomfortable when someone on TV catches a fish and instead of releasing the fish relatively quickly they go into a dissertation about how they caught the fish before finally releasing the fish. I’m like: “the fish didn’t really need to hear all that dude, let it go”

Thank you for posting this @Bassin' Brad. A couple months ago I stopped fishing with a buddy since he was drunk in the morning when I met him at his house to go fishing. He wanted me to join him in his truck while towing his boat but I said no and told him I will meet him in the Marina with my car. Long story short he got stopped in the highway since he was driving like a typical drunk and he was arrested for DUI. I no longer invite him to go fishing with me and he knows better to not call me again to ask to go fishing. Life is too short to risk getting in a car/boat crash with someone who thinks driving under the influence of a drug is a great idea.

Yes, in spades.

Around here it's Gomers 'n Goobers in Pontoon boats with radios blaring cruising the shore line 50 feet from fishermen.

It's best not to ask my how I know what a one ounce spoon banging off a pontoon sounds like, but you can guess.

That's another keeper.

Already this season...and it's not a month old yet...

  1. Gomer with a Pontoon parked at the take out for 40 minutes while his buddy Goober went to get the trailer.
  2. Goober with a bass boat angled ascross both lanes on a local lake.  I parked him in, until I was done.
  3. Gomer who got his boat on the trailer pretty quickly...but didn't pull far enough ahead to let anyone else use the ramp.  I parked him in as well...walked off, went to bathroom, got my boat ready...then moved.

Here's another room temperature IQ move:  Park you car (no trailer) in one of the boat + trailer spots at a busy ramp.

I'd add drivers of cars that feel like they need to beep, gesture or yell impotently when you pass them, like they are the sole arbiters of what is reasonable and prudent speed on the road.

I mean...really?  Why does it matter?

I have one, it's legit, but most days I park in the back 40 too just because I'd rather find a "pull thru" spot for my pick up.  It's a pain to park by the doors with all the foot/car traffic.

I used to feel this way too.  Until T1D and foot issue sort of started limiting the number of steps I have in me.  It's a totally normal response.  Sort of like seeing someone with an EBT card and an iPhone.  You really don't know their circumstances, but it does illicit an emotional response.

My foot issues have done the same for me. One lake we fish has a handicap spot right by the launch. If it is occupied we go else where, because the main parking area is 100yards away up a hill. I simply can't physically walk that far. One day there was a lady sitting in a lounge chair in the spot. She said her husband was out on the lake trying out a boat, and that she was waiting for him there because it was in the shade. She refused to move. We left , but it really bugged me.

Having one beer on a boat is not evidence of a substance abuse problem any more than having a glass of wine at a restaurant is.

Don't get me wrong: I live in a state where 5th, 6th, 7th...heck, 10th, OWI convictions are common, and I think it's pathetic, and we should be tossing them in jail after about three times and tossing the key...but at the same time, it's wrong to conflate responsible consumption of one beverage with the drunken cretins that are piling up bodies.

I can't recall if I told this story here, but the topic is as good a place as any:  Last summer I was fishing a local lake the same day as a tournement.

Late in the day, I 'd pulled up to a point, and was fishing my way towards the bay at the back when a guy in big bass boat comes flying into the bay at what had to be 60 MPH.  Seemed extreme, but if he really wanted to fish back there it was fine with me.

A while later, fishing dock to dock down the point, I see the same boat fishing towards me, dock to dock.  Again, no big deal, I'd peal off when we got close.

We get close, they're two docks down, and I toss a Senko up under the dock I'm on...and tie into a really nice fish.  I net it, land it, unhook it, and put her back in the water.

The other boat fires up it's motor and moves closer, "How big was that fish?"

"I don't know, 23, 24 in."

"That was MY fish!"

I'm a little confused, "What?"

"That was MY fish!"

"I don't understand."

"I'm fishing a tournament, and that fish should have been mine."  This dude's belligerent, like he owns the lake or something.  And I'm getting a little cranky...so I decide to screw with him.  More fun that getting into an argument.

"You're fishing a tournament?  Oh, man...I'm sorry!  Hey, around the other side of the point, there's a red house*, there's two huge bass hanging out on the dock.  I couldn't catch them, but you might be able to."

Belligerent Dude roars off...there's no red house, no bass...that I know of...

As I'm pulling the boat out, Belligerent Dude comes screaming into the dock like everyone should clear the way for him, and I get out of his way as soon as I can.

As he cranking out his boat, I ask, "Did you get those bass?"

"Never found them."

"Hmmm...you went to the red house, right?"

"Yeah!"

"The one with the green roof?"

"I think so...um...no it had a black roof..."

Aw, man...it was the one with the green roof..."

Way more fun than an argument...

*I can't remember exactly what the colors I told the guy were, but you get my point...

I've noticed the English do say " reckon " a lot. Mom's family has been in NC since the 1700s. More Scottish than anything else.

Yeah, I won't give reckon up either, although the wife won't tolerate antee beeotics.?
