Ksam1234 Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 So there is this small lake near me about 25 minutes away , it’s 45 acres called new Albion. The water has been in the lower 60s the past few weeks like 60-62 degrees. Now I haven’t been there at all this week and the air temps have been between 75-82 during the day and 60 during the night. I was thinking about making a night trip tonight and see if they are eating top water. Or just hungry in general. Max depth is 15 ft , lots of weeds for them to hang out in shallow and figured today’s high was 82 and tonight’s low is about 66 .. anyone think it’s worth the trip or if the bass would eat topwater .. would be nice to have my first explosion this year Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 26, 2018 Super User Posted May 26, 2018 Why limit the lures to top water? If the water is in the low 60’s the bass could be on beds, so T-rigged worm or lizard would work. Tom 2 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 27, 2018 Super User Posted May 27, 2018 Bass time is always better than TV time. Like @WRBmentioned why only top water, not an easy thing to handle at night and those trebles hooks. Last night I came home from work at 11:30PM, went to kiss my wife and told her be right back in a jiffy. Came home an hour later with 3 keepers bass caught all on wacky Senko until that Senko got cut in half. Tonight I prepared a whole bag of Senko, Magnum Fluke, pitboss, missile bait D stroyer and big spinner bait hahaha. 2 Quote

I have some soft plastics ready to use though along with some spinnerbaits etc. just wondered if topwater could be a choice during this time Quote

Glaucus Posted May 27, 2018 Posted May 27, 2018 Topwater at night is so much fun. Make sure your heart is healthy. It's different being able to see AND hear the blowup. At night you never know until you suddenly hear the blowup. You should be fine fishing them at your temps. 2 Quote
jr231 Posted May 27, 2018 Posted May 27, 2018 If you have the free time... 25 mins is ALWAYS worth the drive to fish. 2 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted May 27, 2018 Super User Posted May 27, 2018 Yes it's worth trying topwater fishing at night. 24 minutes ago, Glaucus said: Topwater at night is so much fun. You should try topwater fishing for big snook at night the next time you visit Florida. They make bass look like a little bluegill hitting a fly. 2 Quote
buzzbaiter83 Posted May 27, 2018 Posted May 27, 2018 Clacker style buzzbait with a pork or beaver trailer. Get right against the bank and parallel it. Reel as slow as possible to keep it on top. Make sure to drop your rod to let them eat it or you’ll rip it away from them. Have fun and post pics. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 27, 2018 Global Moderator Posted May 27, 2018 I love night fishing, but not with topwater. Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted May 27, 2018 Super User Posted May 27, 2018 If I'm night fishing top water, I always wear clear safety glasses. Just in case you have a lure flying back at you and you can't see it. 2 Quote
Ksam1234 Posted May 27, 2018 Author Posted May 27, 2018 Sadly I went out last night and as soon as I got to the lake it started thundering and lightning.. sooo I’ll go tonight Instead and try and go out Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 27, 2018 Super User Posted May 27, 2018 I would start with too water for a little if no bite I'll pop wacky rig Senko at the same spot. Another reason I change a lot of top water treble to single hook. I found (in my lake) right after sunset, a lot of commotion lure work good but late at night something that can swim slowly with subtle commotion work best. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 27, 2018 Super User Posted May 27, 2018 You can't beat a black Jitterbug at night, but if that doesn't work I tie on a dark colored bladed jig. 1 Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 caught a 6.13 last week here in eastern MA at night on topwater. a buddy in maine has been killin it at night on topwater. so answer is HELL YES YOU SHOULD!!!! i start night fishin when water gets into the 50s i use big swimbaits! was gettin bit couple weeks a go on a big 15 inch snake. a jackal pomadour, megabass iloud, Deps buz jet get chewed at night, you can use those on regular bass rods. 2 Quote
