I guess I never tried Nanofil before because I used mono for so many years. In the last few years I've tried a few braids, Fireline, and even Gliss. But last night was my first night out with Nanofil and after one night, I  really like the stuff, so I'm trying to figure out why it doesn't have a better following. I landed a 8lb Carp that was wrapped up for a bit in what ended up taking about 5 mins to get in and I couldn't find a fray anywhere. So I'm assuming durability down the road is the issue? I have the slippery knot thing solved, so that's not an issue. I had a hard time breaking off (12lb) when I wanted to. Does it self destruct in two weeks...lol?

If you fish it a lot it does self destruct. Lots of fraying. The other thing I didn't like was how the wind played havoc with it.

Did you use a leader? I love my 12lb and I use about a 6ft 8lb fluoro leader. No abrasion issues.

No leader. I tried my normal two knots and they slipped or broke which was weird. I went to  Eugene Bend and it held like a champ.

A leader clears all abrasion issues. I'm tossing Easy Shiners in weeds with Nano/leader. No issues.

I like to play on the margins, and my only isssue was knot strength in the lighter pound tests, both direct and leader knots. Seems like once you get around 8lb. and above, it becomes less of an issue. Was enough of a problem that I finally moved on after about a year and a half of trying to make it work.

Yeah,  I put it on one reel and spent 15 mins trying to put on a lure. I thought that it was headed for the trash. I tied a Eugene Bend and I couldn't break it off by hand. After I landed the Carp and a big Drum, I had confidence in the knot and I found my self wanting to use that rod all night because I liked the line so much. One night though. Bass fishing was somewhat slow.

I tried it once but I had issues with wind knots but the bigger issue was it was breaking on me in random spots, like someone took a pair of scissors to the line.  Just clean cuts in the middle of the line during a hookset.

I didn't say abrasion, I said fraying. Random fraying Since its neither braided nor fused you will see frays of microfilement up to two inches long up and down the spool if you have good eyes. This contributes to the parachute effect the line already has. If it doesn't bother you there are good buys to be had, as many retailers are dumping it.

You seem to know what you're talking about. I'll leave you to it.

The original introductory NanoFil was  white and a flat line that tended to wind knot. That was 2 strikes, strike 3 was it’s strength to diameter compared to other braids.

I don't have any Nanofil on a reel now but I always liked it for finesse fishing, never any issues to speak of compared to other lines with "their" own issues.

And, knot strength? I think what Nanofil really did was expose how bad some anglers tie knots. If you tie good, accurate knots, it is just fine.

One thing: It is the only line on a spinning reel that did that giant "slip" where the whole spool of line rotated. In its defense, I hadn't tied on a backer line or used any tape in that instance.

*** If you do change, could I make a suggestion? Try Sufix Nanobraid in a very light test strength. If you can find a bass that can break this stuff in 6 lbs. test, I want to see a photo of the fish. So far, on finesse reels where I have its 2 lbs. test spooled on, inadvertently catch the occasional bass or catfish, I am up to 4 lbs. fish with no line breakage. 6 would be beyond what is needed and just so thin, casts a mile.

And, 14 lbs. Nanobraid, the largest available, has the same diameter as 10 lbs. Sufix 832, another line I really, really like.

Nanobraid is the strongest braid, thinnest diameter braid I have ever used.

This would keep me from going back to Nanofil. But, it works very well for a lot of us. It certainly acquired a rather quick group of "haters" and I think this might be because the company really over-hyped the line when it was introduced. Happens all the time.    Brad

I've got 3 spools of braid/superline to go thru, but I'll take a look at the Nanobraid, is it limp like normal braid or does it have some body like Nanofil? I dont like the limp braids.

Thanks for all of the responses.

The only thing I found Nanofil good for is pull-loops for wrapping guides.  Even with thread being the only thing it touches, it'll be frayed beyond use after about 18 guides.

Not a lot of love...almost sounds like we're talking about a different line from what I experienced after one night..I'm gonna leave it on just the one rod for now.

I use 10 lb or higher Nanofil with a 12 lb Invix leader, tied with an Alberto knot on spinning setups. I don't go lighter than 10 lb Nanofil because the smaller diameter ones cuts through  the leader. I don't fish everyday, and not for more than a couple hours at a time. No issues with wear, but I do reverse the spool at the start of the next season. I did have a problem with direct tie to lures, so started using the fluoro leader.

I had good success with it, using the 8 and 10 pound sizes for open water presentations. I got away from it because of the price and handling in the wind, which never stops here it seems.

Todd2, I'd have to go and read the technical details on the line but you can find it searching for Sufix's website.

I think Nanobraid is only a 3 strand construct, something like that, and not the more typical 8 strand sort. The difference as best I can tell from reading Sufix's information is related to the braiding done at more acute angles, tighter winds.

I think I know what you are asking about limpness/body and for the 2 lbs. stuff, it is sooooooo fine, 1/1000ths of an inch in diameter, I don't think there is any way to build much body into it. I have some of the 14 lbs. Nanobraid on a spinning reel, I bought this to compare to 10 lbs. Sufix 832 (since they have the same diameter) and I do think it has more body than 832 which is pretty limp especially since it has that element of Gore added to it for that very purpose.

I think 14 lbs. Nanobraid would be the absolute peak in strength to diameter ratios for those of us who really want to stick with braids of 10 lbs. test or so. With the 14, you'd get the 10 lbs. size and i think around the equivalent of many other 20 lbs. test braids in breaking strength. That's a great combination.

It was a magical "find" for me. I sure wish they made it in a bright color.

With everyday use I experienced all of the above problems with 10lb NanoFil.  At the end of a year the coating had worn and the original casting distance had suffered.  I went back to original Fireline 8lb. and got longer casting distance and fewer problems.

What's wrong with it?.....................EVERYTHING.

Wind knots, durability, casting distance, are the few complaints I have off the top of my head.

I used 4lb on my Panfish set up, and had nothing but trouble with it. I went back to 5lb Power Pro, and that line has been on my UL reel ever since.
