redryder100 Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 I just bought 3 Shimano casitas and now I'm looking for a new spinning reel. Any suggestions? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 24, 2018 Super User Posted May 24, 2018 Lots of good reels available. Price range? Quote
Fishingmickey Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Redryder, A Shimano fan boy for 30+ years here. Any of the Shimano's from the Seinna (30 buck low end) to NASCI (100 buck higher end) are excellent reels IMHO. The one's priced higher are somewhat overkill but ooh lala sweet to have in hand. Super User Darren. Posted May 24, 2018 Super User Posted May 24, 2018 Welcome aboard! Sounds like you were looking in the $100 range for a spinning reel. I'm also a Shimano guy for spinning and use Shimano Stradics. You can find them in the mid-$100 range up to about $230 depending on model. I prefer 1000 size, but the 2500 is what most consider a standard size for bass fishing, tho there's no true accepted standard. 1 Quote

Fishingmickey Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 I have five spinning reels, three are the 2500's one 3000 and one 4000. The three small one I use for very light lures like the original floating rapala's, bandit sized 100 cranks, the small sized balsa shad raps, drop shot, finesse jig and Ned rig The 3k I have spooled a little heavier with 20# braid and usually a 12-16# fluorocarbon leader. The 4k I use for power shotting (oversized drop shot) 30# braid with 14#-20# leader. Quote

Fishingmickey Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 (edited) Hi Optim, I also primarily use bait casting and so does most of the field. There is a fair amount of spinning tackle used though. If I go out fully loaded for bear I'm packing fifteen combo's. Three heavy's Curado 300's 1 e and 2 ej's with appropriate sized rods, 8 MH baitcasters 30# braid and 14-16# fluorocarbon, 2 med/light bait casters 10 & 12# fluorocarbon and 2 spinning rods 8# mono or braid and leader combination. No I probably don't use every rod each time out. But I do use a high percentage of them each time out. I do agree it is too many and I will pare them down if I know what I am going to be fishing primarily. Fishingmickey Edited May 24, 2018 by Fishingmickey Quote

It would give you chance to maybe try them. I've always gone with Shimano. I did buy a Daiwa BG 2500 last month that I really like though. I'll be buying another in a 1500. Quote
Fishingmickey Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Honestly I don't know what the favorite flavors are regarding brands. I'm sure there is a good bit of Daiwa, couple of the guys are sponsored by Johnson outdoors. FM Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted May 25, 2018 Super User Posted May 25, 2018 For around $75 on eBay and often Amazon or even full $100 retail price, it's hard to beat the Daiwa BG. It's sort of an odd model in a sense that it's a very well made reel that ignores the latest trend of dropping weight. That's the way I'd go, but I don't think you will be disappointed with anything from Shimano or Pflueger in the price range (unless you have large hands - the bail on some Shimanos hits my thumb). 1 Quote

Shimano makes excellent spinning reels in various prices and these reels can take a beating for many years when other spinning reels break down easily. I own several that are over a decade old and they still work fine. Penn is another company that makes good spinning reels. I prefer using size 4000 spinning reels since they tend to be more powerful and have more line capacity, which is needed for me since I use these reels for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. 1 Quote
