Man this story sucks but I'll share it in the event something shows up.

A friend of mine had his boat parked behind his house. It was a 14 foot Lowe jon boat w/a  20 hp Tohatsu tiller jet outboard, Minn Koat bow mount trolling motor, gas tank, 2 batteries.

Some low life stole everything except the boat. The motor was bolted on and the theif actually cut the transom to remove the motor. The Minn Kota was also cut off.

Total loss is somewhere around $6000.

His insurance will not cover the loss. Where he had his boat parked was just off his property and in a small lot behind his house where he had permission to park it due to lack of space in his small yard.

Some people.....

Beware of the theives :-/

Sawed the motor off????  I find it hard to believe no one heard the saw going to town on an aluminum boat!

Homeowner's insurance should cover it even if it was 10 ft. off the property line.

Just curious as to why the boat insurance won't cover it.  WOuldn't be Progressive by chance .... would it?  I'm beginning to think Boat Insurance is a scam!  I had stuff stolen out of my boat, and they wouldn't cover it, and it was parked 10 feet from my kitchen window.

When I got my insurance on my boat I asked beforehand what and how it would be covered.  When stored, it has to have the trailer lock installed and locked.  My garage also has to be locked that it is stored in.  Save all receipts and document with photos or video, the tackle and items stored in the boat.  Add up what is inside or onboard your boat.  You will be shocked.

If it is under a certain HP, you don't need boat insurance - homeowners covers it.

When you do a lot of boat restoration, and lots of these older boats and motors, you find out that the chain saw on the transom is quite common.  Usually though, the boat is stolen, and the is found on the side of the road a couple miles down, with a cut out in the transom, as it is much easier to disguise, and resell a motor, than the whole boat.  Surprising that it happened at the house.

Darn Boat Snake, that Sucks!

I guess we should all take a look at where we park are boats and not make them tempting for a thief, toss a lock cable around the axle and through the rim would be easy enough.

MOST homeowners insurance policey's will cover if the motor is 40 horsepower and the boat is covered. Dont understand why it isnt covered? Definatley investigate that more and torment the insurance company if you have to, something isnt right there.

I have not seen the boat since it was ransacked.

According to my friend, he feels that the theif used a Sawz-All (sp?) to cut the transom.

As far as the insurance, he did not have boat insurance. I do not know what company his homeowners is through, all I know is that he was told by his insurance company that they would not cover the loss.

Unfortunately, the small area where his boat was parked is kind of hidden and not frequently traveled.

I did not post this to start a debate, just to pass along info that may help someone in the future.

I can say this, being in law enforcement I see alot of thefts. You'd be suprised what insurance companies do once push comes to shove.......
