Tyler Frye Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Looking at buying some okuma TCS Rods. I’ve heard some good and some bad about them and am looking for opinions of those who own them and have experience with them. Thanks in advance Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 17, 2018 Super User Posted May 17, 2018 I have two, the Mat Daddy and a spinnerbait version. I like them quite a bit, and use them often. Here's a review: https://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/mat-daddy-helios-review.html Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted May 17, 2018 Super User Posted May 17, 2018 I have a Mat Daddy. About the sensitivity you would expect from a 7'11" heavy rod. I have no complaints, but it is relegated to punching, c-rigging, and rare (for me) swimbait...it doesn't get a ton of use. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted May 17, 2018 BassResource.com Administrator Posted May 17, 2018 I also have two, the Mat Daddy and the Jig rod. I use one or the other almost every outing for the past 3 years. Here's my review: https://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/tcs-cerros-reel.html https://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/okuma-tcs-rod.html Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 18, 2018 Global Moderator Posted May 18, 2018 Great rods and you can get them for a steal if you look around a little bit. Quote
DomQ Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 I heard scott it leaving okuma for favorite fishing. 1 Quote

Worse gear, but better popularity and exposure for him. I like your profile pic btw, rip LP. Oh and about the rod, I have the 7'3" H/F frog/swimbait rod. Does both of those very well and imo it has pretty good sensitivity and makes a decent jig rod. 2 Quote

Okuma just went through a pretty good overhaul with their split from Savage Gear. Maybe he didn't jive with someone there now. Other than the added exposure, a very questionable move as it's a huge step down in the quality of gear. Quote

I’m hoping with him leaving Okuma though, that his rods go on clearance. I will gladly pick up a few on clearance. Quote
newyorktoiowa57 Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 I'm not sure that the favorite gear is worse. He is fishing with the higher end stuff in the 200-250 range like the big sexy and rush rods. He has also been using Metaniums, although he is not sponsored by Shimano. Quote
DomQ Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 In canada favorite rods arent even a thing here yet so i cant really comment on the quality of the rods. But are their high end rods really worth the money? Quote

But are their high end rods really worth the money? I haven't fished their high end rods, but their other rods I've fished were underwhelming at best. They're so hard to read reviews on, because I'm positive a lot of them come from kids you could put guides on a straight tree branch and say it was from Favorite and they'd say it was the greatest rod ever made. The ones I've heard that were actually from guys that had fished them said sensitivity was poor for a supposedly high end rod, about on par with a $100 rod, they were heavy, and disappointing as a whole. That's only a handful of reviews though, so far from what I'd consider a real fair assessment, but considering a TCS can be had for around $100 with just a little looking, there's no way I'd buy one over the Okuma. 2 Quote

I def want to pick up some of the TCS rods. The pricing is great when looking around and they work well for the areas I fish based on tons of feedback and watching the old SM videos. I do hope they clear them out too at some point to save some coin. About Favorite: I have been going by what people have been saying for the most part with no experience online fishing the equipment myself. I have zero experience fishing them. My buddy has been fishing the $99 dollar Flair 7'3" XH Flair Frog Rod and the 7'3" XH Big Sexy. They are both set up for bigger baits. Based on the baits being used, these are the size of fish he's been catching on average or bigger almost daily, many times in multiples. I currently try to go to the spot with him at least 1 to 2x a week if possible, it's just a drive for me. I will see how they hold up for him, but they have been good so far. We've been fishing in places with pads and super heavy vegetation, the definition of "Florida" fishing and he's been pulling them outta there. . Quote

The 691MH and the 701H, The 691 is an awesome spinnerbait rod(3/8 is what I exclusivesly throw), but my 701H broke and now the insert has fallen off the top guide on the replacement. They are good rods though. Much nicer than a dobyns fury IMO. 1 Quote

I had white bird that I did everything with for a long time. I don't really remember if it was sensitive or balanced or anything but it was indestructible. Quote

jtharris3 Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 Not trying to derail this thread but, God, I hope Scott doesn’t align himself with Favorite!! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 12, 2019 Super User Posted March 12, 2019 Pretty sure he's invested in Favorite. It's more than a sponsorship deal. Quote

I'm going to assume there will be a Scott Martin series of Favorite rods next year. Favorite also has Dustin Connell, Mark Daniels Jr, Brian Latimer and some guy named Andy Morgan. Impressive bullpen. Quote

Scott Martin’s rod is the only one I’d be willing to try from favorite, especially if he’s using them in tournaments and stuff and they clearly work well. And if he was part of the developing process of it then it would probably be a pretty good rod. 2 Quote

DomQ Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 If you follow favorite on Instagram you'll see they they are working on new reels, and to be honest they look ridiculous. They look like those cheap reels that you see on like wish. Not bashing them but they dont look like something I'm going to fork out large money on. Quote

Pretty sure Favorite's reels are just branded generic Doyo's.. the parts are interchangeable with some Kast King and other 'no name' reels from the same plant. Quote
