I have a Minn Kota with a cable steer foot pedal.  Now the pedal won't steer the trolling motor.  So I looked at the pedal and the cables appear to be on the tracks but when I go one direction the cable doesn't move, but it will still go the other direction so I don't thing the cables broke.  I plan on trying to work on it tomorrow and was wondering if anyone has had this happen and can give me any pointers.

What model is it?

If it's an AT model they had a problem with the control head itself and the clamps that hold down the cables.  One or both sides would crack and you'd lose head turning ability.  The fix is a modification that involves changing the upper head with a new one along with some new modified brackets for the inside clamps.  These come as a kit which you can get from most any MK TM servicer.

First eliminate the easy stuff before buying parts.  About once a year on mine, I'll get a small pebble down underneath the pedal lodged right where the cable attaches to the pedal.  Yes... waaay back underneath.  You can barely see it.  That will prevent the motor from turning in one direction, but not the other.  You'll have to unscrew the pedal from the floor and lift it up.  Pebble pops free, screw it back down and you're in business.

Give that a whirl first.

Take the 4 screws holding the 2 pieces of the head together. Pop the top off. The cable is there and you will see the bracket Cart7 spoke about.

If it's the old style you will see holes further back you can lossen your cables and slide this bracket back and reattach then tighten your cables back up.

Your cable adjust is under were the cable goes to the foot petal.

Another thing I do is take electric tape and tape the cables to the pully in the head. It's a pain getting them right if they come undone.

It's diffcult getting your cable adjusted right. Just take screw drive with and do it on the water.

Just fixed it

One of the cables had come off of the pulley in the head of the trolling motor.  Took me quite a while to figure out how I was supposed to get it back on.  It seemed like I was about an inch short on cable.  I eventually moved the propellar head in the right position (somewhat torquing it a little bit farther than it wanted to go, but not much) the stars aligned and I finally got it back on track.

Note to self, control anger on water.  It happened Saturday.  I was throwing a square billed LC RC 1.5.  It got hung up and I went up to get it and it would not come off, I even bent over and got elbow deep in the water trying to get it.  Finally it broke off.  Out of frustration of just loosing my first LC I slammed the trolling motor pedal with my foot to get out of there and the cable came off of it's track.  So now i have just lost a LC and my trolling motor is not functional.    So I would warn everyone against hitting that trolling motor pedal to hard or with too much force.   But anyway it is fixed and I learned my lesson.  Glad I wasn't in a tournament.

Make another note;  Bring a small amount of tools and leave them on your boat just in case! ;)
