Pitching with hook that has a screw on pin?

Just getting into flipping/pitching for LMB and had a question for more experienced guys. I was using a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook T-rigged and a rage tail structure bug. Went OK but I was surprised how much the soft plastic bait took a beating and got torn up. Plus I was constantly having to fiddle with it to get it back on the hook sitting properly. I starting thinking about it, should I get/do they make a 4/0 EWG style hook with a screw on center pin to keep the soft plastic in place and extend the life of it?

 

Looks like Owner makes one (I attached a photo of it) and I was also looking at something like the other photo made by VMC that has a barb on it to help hold the soft plastic body in place. Just wanted some opinions on this and maybe specific recommendations. Thanks!

I use the Trokar TK 130 flipping hook which has the keeper like the VMC in your picture for punchin only. I use the Owner Twist Lock for all moving plastics. (Speed Worm, Cut R, Swim Baits etc)

I have had a hard time hooking fish with screwlock hooks when I'm pitching. I like an EWG or straight shank for that duty.

You can always add the screwlock to the hook you want.  They sell them individually.  I like them on the belly weighted Gammy hook.  Personally, I like the non screw in for pitching/flipping because I use a screw in Bullet weight instead of pegging it.

Can you suggest a / show me what and add on screwlock looks like?

You might try the Gamakatsu skip gap hook. I use them for several types of soft plastics.

I throw Rage Bugs a lot.  90% of the time, its on a Gamakatsu weighted hook with an 'add-on' hitchhiker or cps.

So the example you gave with the Bass Pro link, if I chose to go that route I could just "attach" that to my Gammy 4/0 EWG and I'm good to go?

Yep.  Look at the different sizes but they should thread right into the hook eye.  Some use them on Senkos.

Twist-Lock leaves an annoying gap, since you can't really bury the eye into the plastic, that picks up vegetation and other crud.  Normal flipping hook lets you bury the hook inside the nose of the plastic bait so the bullet weight will be flush with the plastic.  Much cleaner presentation going in and out.

All my texas style rigging is done with mustad ewg grip pin hooks. 4/0 for craws etc. 5/0 for toads 6/0 for punching.

I do 

I Snell for all type's of vertical bottom contact presentations regardless of cover.

Alot of times. Its a lil more aggrevating to tie to me with that style bait keeper. If im in a hurry or get aggrevates i go nack to a palomar and really dont notice any diffrence in hook ups.

To keep a worm or creature up I use a swivel that runs from the line to the underside of the hook below the nose of the worm.  Keeps the nose from sliding.  No real difference in action or hookup rate.

Straight shank, ewg, and screw lock hooks all work for me. I usually throw an ewg, but there are things about a good straight shank and a screw lock hook that I like for flipping and sometimes go for. Sounds like you are getting annoyed with the screw lock so try something else. Just because the industry says you have to do it one way doesn’t mean that’s the way for you. What ever is most comfortable for you is gonna catch you the most fish in my experience. Play around with different hooks!

I do this too or use the parasite clips . It works well .

Everyone is obsessed with keeping your lure from sliding down their hook.

 

I want mine to slide on the hook & up the line as well!
