TopDog Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Is anyone able to answer the previous question? How do you claim that for tax purposes? I am intrigued.... Do a google search for boat fuel tax form and your state. It should come up. Basically from what I understand (correct me if Im worng) there is a tax in the cost per gallon of tax that goes to fixing the roads or something like that. Since a boat is in water, you can claim this. Hope it helps. Let me know your state and I can help you find the form. Quote
frogtog Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 In order to get non highway taxes back you must get a form ( in NC it is a non highway tax form ) Then you have to keep up with " ALL " your fuel that you use. This includes your vehicles also. Any fuels that you use other than for highway use you can recover the highway use tax that they charge you when you buy it. This includes but not limited to lawn mowers, boats, weed whackers etc. It's not as easy as it sounds. You have to keep up with your receipts and mileage on your vehicles and they will audit you! they checked me this year. Most of the time I will get back anywhere from $800 to $1600 per year and this helps a lot. Some states have higher gas taxes than NC does. If you do a lot of fishing I would recommend you keep up with it. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted November 14, 2007 Super User Posted November 14, 2007 Has this blown anyone else away other than me? I must live under a rock. I didn't know about this. I think our state tax on gas is 42 cents per gallon. Thanks for the info. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted November 14, 2007 Super User Posted November 14, 2007 In order to get the tax refunded on off road fuel we have to get a receipt and have it signed by the station attendand and marked paid. Then we have to fill out the proper forms and send them in along with all the receipts. In a month or so we get a refund check. Quote

It's sounds like a lot of work, but it seems like this pays off for you guys. Might have to look into next year. Quote
Jeff_NHBA Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 In VA you just need to submit your original receipts along with the corresponding tax form. Quote
Little_Minnow Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 I am a marina owner in Texas, and I know that people keep receipts from gas purchased at the marina to claim the $0.42 per gallon highway tax back. It IS a tax for repairing roads so if the fuel is not used on road this tax does not apply. This is similar to the red dyed deisel fuel they use on farms that you may have heard of. It is easy for people to claim the receipts from here because it says on the receipt it is from a marina. I do not know how you claim a reciept from a regular gas station, but I would be curious to know. Josh Quote

If the fuel is being put into a boat it would make sense not to even charge the tax. There is a gas station near my house that has separate pump for on road and off road vehicles. You can fill up your wood chipper, lawn mowers and such at that off road pumps but you need to fill up your truck at the on road pumps. I'll have to ask if I can take my boat to the off road pumps.
