Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted May 15, 2018 Super User Posted May 15, 2018 I'm having problems with my monofilament line breaking. It's not breaking at my knots, but 20-25 yards into the spool. I cast my crankbait and it flies with a 20-25 yard tail of mono behind it. At first I thought it was my rod or reel having a rough spot, but it"s happening on all six of my rods (two are new this season). It's starting to get a bit expensive, losing my crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. Any ideas? Please help!! By the way, I'm using Trilene XL, and BPS Mono. Thanks, Falcon Quote
Turtle135 Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 spinning gear or baitcasting gear? what pound test mono? Quote
Armtx77 Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 -Use a dry Q-Tip and check the guides. -How old is the mono? If new, you may have got a bad batch...it happens. It is odd that you are breaking off that far back. Quote
Todd2 Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 Ya got me...different lines, different rods, that far back? Have both spools of line been stored properly..out of heat and sun? Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted May 16, 2018 Super User Posted May 16, 2018 If you get a bad backlash with mono/fluoro it can kink the line deep into the spool and create a weak spot. I've had sunline sniper snap 20 yards from the lure on a weak hookset because of this. Unfortunately the only real solution is to be more careful when picking out backlashes as to not kink any of the loops, or just to backlash less (yea I know, we'd all like that wouldn't we lol). 1 Quote
Brad in Texas Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 I think MassYak85 is on the right track. There is essentially no tensile "pull" on line that far up in your spool. If you cast beyond the 20 to 25 yards, and I am sure you do in those presentations, the line has already absorbed the initial inertia shock . . . spool going from 0 to XX MPH, you know some speed, when you whip the rod forward. And, at 20 to 25 yards of line out, where you are breaking off, for many reels, this would be about the point where the spool outruns the line being pulled off setting up for a possible backlash. The projectile (lure) isn't even really pulling on the line all that much, the spool issue becomes its speed exceeding required line. Heck, even a kinked line from picking out a knot seems odd to me. When I have ever had a spinnerbait go flying off, it is usually very close to the end where I picked up a nick, some abrasion, but my cast got it going forward and off it goes. Another anecdote about how very little pressure is on the line up in a spool. Pro bass angler, Aaron Martens, uses braid backer for a rather long length of fluorocarbon that generally exceeds the longest cast he plans to make by 20 or so yards. When he ties this really long leader, or main line, whatever we might call it, he uses an overhand knot. He says that since he never gets close to the knot, why bother taking time and tying a super strong knot. He is correct. Brad Quote
lo n slo Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 has to be bad line. grab a spool of Big Game and give it a go. 1 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted May 16, 2018 Super User Posted May 16, 2018 Got any buddies who might be paying you back with a prank? 1 Quote
CroakHunter Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Could your have line slipped in between the spool and inside of the frame of the reel causing abraision, but only on that one side where it rubbed? I've had this happen when I was starting out and was over filling my spools. And until I learned and paid more attention it happened more than once. Hope you figure out the culprit Quote
papajoe222 Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 I wouldn't say it 'has' to be your line, but it likely is. I had a bulk spool of Original Stren that I'd used for respooling every season. One season, I started having a problem with the line breaking at the oddest spots. Got a new spool, switched out all the older stuff and never had another problem. 1 Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted May 18, 2018 Author Super User Posted May 18, 2018 Thanks for all the help guys. I tried the Q-tip on all my guides prior to my post. The line is new this Spring and stored in a box, in a closet. I've only had a couple backlashes, but it is possible that's the culprit. Falcon Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Trilene XL has serious fraying issues, I used to use it a lot, its good mono other than the fraying. If you want a similar line but better, i urge you to try sufix siege. sufix siege is what i used to replace the trilene xl i was using, havent looked back since 1 Quote
