I ended an awesome afternoon of smallmouth fishing by losing my BRAND NEW Powell Endurance over the side of the boat during the run back to the launch. I am still sick over it! I just got the rod last week and made maybe 20 pitches/flips with it. I had a Lews Tournament MB reel on it, making it an approximately $300.00 setup. I’m just a blue collar guy so that’s a small fortune to me as far as fishing gear is concerned. Strap your rods down folks!!

Happened to me once.  I snagged one of my rods on a back cast and tossed it overboard.  It seemed to sink almost in slow motion.  I went home and Jerry rigged a bunch of large treble hooks on a metal weighted broomstick, went back and trolled for it for hours.  Never found it.  A special kind of pain no doubt.  Sorry man.

That sucks. You never think these things will happen to you, until they do.

2 weeks ago, while kayaking the current and wind carried me into some low hanging trees. In my haste to grab my paddle I knocked my $200 rod and reel combo into the water. I was lucky in the fact that it went in at about 5 feet of clear water and the reel was white so I could clearly see it. The problem was the river water was in the high 40's and I was in a sit-in kayak so jumping out was not a nice option. I tried hooking in with my other rod to no avail. I was eventually able to get my paddle under it and raise it to the surface, then slowly work it towards me without it slipping off the paddle.

If it had went in any deeper it would have been lost for good.

As soon as I got home I ordered paddle and rod leashes.

I’ve lost two rigs in five years, each in the $300 range. It’s a drag, I feel for you.

On the other hand, it’s a perfect excuse to upgrade when TW has their  Memorial Day sale....

Very painful.  I feel for you brother.  Twice I've dropped combos overboard, but got both back without jumping in. (Thank God cuz I can't swim!)  Thanks to a boater coming too close to the fishing pier, I was forced off a flat rock I had been standing on that was only a couple inches above the waterline.  All rocks along the shore.  Slipped and fell breaking 2 pieces off a Falcon Expert...a $280 rod.  I got it on closeout, but still very painful and it was a favorite at the time.  Was also physically injured so that was a pain, too.

Now here's the question of the day.  Do you re-buy the same setup? Or replace it with something different?

And is the same rod/reel still available?  Many of mine would require putting a Want ad in the Flea Market.

I've lost 3 combo's overboard.  One was my 8 yr olds fault when he snagged a tree in heavy river current.  He tried to clamp down the line with his fingers, got cut and let go.  The second I hastily set down on the deck with the lure hanging over the edge about an inch under water.  We passed over some surface grass (trolling motor speed), the lure snagged the grass and over it went.  I spent three hours in chest deep water using a metal rake trying to find that d**n thing.  The third was trying to squeeze through a gap in tule reeds, somehow one of the rods on deck got tangled up and pulled over.

The most darned one was when 3 plano boxes full of jigs blew off the deck at speed.  I would have never thought in a million years boxes that probably weighed 5 pounds each could get blown away like a tissue.

Ouch. Did you catch a fish on it? At least that would take some of the sting out of losing it.

I lost a G.Loomis with a Chronarch years back.  I dropped a way point, and went back with a snagging hook and got it back.  It none the worse after a thorough cleaning.

Eases the pain a bit to here some stories from fellow anglers. I do plan on buying the same exact setup. I hate to spend the money right now, but as you all know, this sport is an addiction, and I want my setup back. Nothing a little overtime can’t fix I suppose. The worst part about it is that that Endurance does float! Unfortunately, the river had white cap waves from a strong wind and the current was strong. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack at the time, not to mention I was having a full blow caniption haha! By now it could be god knows where. Cough it up to a hard lesson learned!

Dang. Sorry, man.

I lost quite a few hundred in cell phone, camera,

I posted this a while back where I saw Chris Lane let one of his rods go and it fell in the water on MLF and it floated.  Didn't know what kind it was though.

Here's the video on Youtube:

Floating rod with sinking reel. Will it be sinking or floating?

My Avids all float with any reel less than 9 oz.  Don't ask how I know this, it was not in a controlled environment. ?

Back around Memorial Day of 2007, I lost basically a brand new Team Daiwa TD-X 103HSD with a 6'6" TD-S green rod over the boat at a local lake not too far from me in about 15 feet of water.  I jumped in after it in jeans and the water was only in the 60s.  Swam down into murk and never found it.  I got so desperate that I got out of the boat soaking wet and randomly knocked on the door of people in their homes along that shoreline asking to borrow goggles.  They must have thought I was truly crazy standing on their front porch panicked over the rod/reel and soaking wet in jeans!

Crazy to them maybe, but not crazy to us!

2 Saturdays ago i was on st. clair when my boater caught another smallie, and I set my rod down (back deck) to grab the net. I had just made a cast with a 1/2oz. bladebait. We landed, measured, and thru the fish back in the water (paper tourney), and I turn around and my favorite stick / revo was gone.  O crap! My partner looked back and 20' away the last 3" of the rod butt was sticking out of the water, so we were able to go fetch it. Full cork handle kept it afloat.....

It's always a good idea to be careful with your rods and not let them fall in the water. If they do fall then you better figure out how to retrieve them since oneday somebody might swim over the area you dropped the rod and will let your rod for themselves.
