Super User NorthernBasser Posted May 13, 2018 Super User Posted May 13, 2018 I'm in the market for a new Texas Rig worm/creature bait rod. After looking around for a bit, I think I have it narrowed down to these rods. Anybody have any experience with any of these? Dobyns Fury FR 704C. $110 Daiwa Zillion 7'3" med/heavy fast worm/jig rod. Reg. $260, on sale $155 Cashion 7'3" med/heavy fast. $180 Was also looking at Tatula and Zodias rods. Quote
Mjmj Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 you might want to look at a KISTLER helium 3. I don't know what your price range is, but in my opinion, they are the best bang for the buck. I have a G Lomis NRX and I find myself throwing the Kistler over it. 1 Quote

But a little more than I wanna pay TBH. Would like to stay under $200 if possible. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 13, 2018 Super User Posted May 13, 2018 Dobyns FR 734C or SA 734C Irod IRG 744C Lots and lots of choices, comes down to personal preference and customer service. I know Catt like his Powell rod, my preference is ALX Dupty, with 20% sale discount. Tom 2 Quote
Falkus Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 Get the Avid X. It might be little high ($199) Since I do alot of texas rig - spend my hard cold cash on those two. Gloomis NRX 803C JWR and NRX 873 CCR Keep in mind that - I never pay retail price always half off 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 13, 2018 Super User Posted May 13, 2018 I have a couple Zillion rods so am a bit biased towards them. Also any time I can get a $260 rod for $155 I'd consider it a no brainer unless the rod got bad reviews. I have a few Tatula rods and consider them a lot of bang for the buck. The Daiwa rods I have seem to fish a bit heavy. As for the others: Don't recall reading negative reviews of the Fury. Zodias is usually highly rated, but I have read a couple claiming them to be junk. Cashion doesn't get much attention here, but reviews I have read were all good with one exception. That would lead me to believe he got a bad example. Stuff happens in production. Might also be what happened to the two negative Zodias reviewers. Only wish I could afford a Helium 3. Appear to be a great value. 1 Quote

How do you get the 20% off if you don't mind me asking? 7 minutes ago, new2BC4bass said: I have a couple Zillion rods so am a bit biased towards them. When you says they fish heavy, are you talking about the Tat or both the Tat and Zillion? Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 13, 2018 Super User Posted May 13, 2018 Call Alex, they sent a flier recently. Tom Quote

Always hard to pass up a good deal. When you says they fish heavy, are you talking about the Tat or both the Tat and Zillion? I guess I stated that incorrectly. I seldom fish a rod at its extremes. Instead I go to a different power rod. I look at a rod's ratings. My MLR and MR Tatula rods have ratings for what I consider one power higher. The MHR and MHF have what I consider MH ratings. My research on the 6'10" MHF suggests it does better using lures above its lowest rating. It is a new rod and hasn't had a reel on it yet. Haven't fished the others at either extreme of their ratings. Two Daiwa rods I have fished at the extreme listing were HF rods with 1/2 oz. low end ratings. The 7'6" Ziliion handled a 1/2 oz. hollow bodied frog well. The 7'4" Tatula not so well. The Tat does quite well with a 5/8 oz. frog. The Zillion 6'6" M-XF has a medium power rod rating. I didn't do well with 1/4 oz. lures.....but that is probably because it was when I was learning to use a baitcast reel and didn't have the necessary skill yet. Unfortunately I quickly came to prefer 7' or longer rods and it hasn't seen any use in some time. Something I would like to change this year. Reviews of the ALX rods are quite good. I treated myself to two as a Christmas present to myself. The Toadface still has the tags on it. I regret reporting that I haven't used the Deputy for what I bought it for yet....bottom contact. I went to the spot on the river where I try out new gear and keep up on my casting. Therefore it had a spinnerbait on it so I can't make a comment on its sensitivity. Reviews say it has very good sensitivity. Haven't tried it for accuracy yet. Some rods do better for me than others. 1 Quote

Do not own a rod with EVA grips, will never own a rod EVA grips! I fish a lot of extremely heavy cover & ALX didn't excite me, I could take em or leave em. Dobyns Fury is fine but me personally would move up to the Sierra Series. 1 Quote
LonnieP Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 I use a 7ft medium Zillion for t rigs and I love it. I also have a fury which is a nice rod for the money, but it is no comparison to the zillion which is lighter, more sensitive and has a better feel to it. I also have a Tatula rod and that is a step above the fury. 2 Quote
Junger Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 Got the 7'3 MHF Zillion for ALF for $155, loving it so far. I use it for my 3/8-1/2 oz chatter baits and it will fling them a country mile. Lifetime warranty to boot. I'm about to pull the trigger for the 7'4 MHR. 1 Quote
Matt_3479 Posted May 13, 2018 Posted May 13, 2018 I would have to say get the zillion for that price. A heck of a rod for half price. I don’t have a fury but have heard nothing but great things! I do have the zillion, a Dobyns sierra, Kistler Helium lta, tatula xt, Avid x, e6x and an imx pro. I wouldnt say the zillion is my favourite but it is a great rod! And for that price I’d buy 10 more! 1 Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted May 13, 2018 Super User Posted May 13, 2018 I've never fished the latest Zillion rods, but I always thought the original Zillion rods were a sleeper. Not sure why they never took off. If the new Zillions are anything like the previous version, then to me it's a no-brainer that you should grab the Zillion. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted May 13, 2018 Super User Posted May 13, 2018 The Zillion rods use the same SVF/x45 blank that is on the old black Tatula rods. Only difference is SiC vs. Alconite, and zaion reel seat. The Tatula Elite has a new version of SVF with some kind of nano-whatever. The Zillion is a good deal at the sale price, but it's kind of a downgrade from the newer rod. Quote
