Dave Margerum Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Just bought a new Tatula Ct (7.3:1). I also bought a Tatula 6'10" MH Fast for my new reel. I want to really give baitcasters a serious try this year and decided that I needed a better reel. I have a 3 baitcasters already (that aren't the greatest) but I hardly use them (backlash issues , then I revert to my spinning gear). I currently have a Quantum Burst (7.1:1) spooled with 65 lb braid on a 7' Heavy rod that I use for frogging. I use this one more than my other 2 baitcasters and it seems to work fine. My other baitcasters are a Browning Aggressor 6.4:1 spooled with 15 lb fluoro on a 7'1' Med-Fast that I sometime use for cranking, and a Quantum Kinetic PT spooled with 20 lb braid on a 6'10 MH Fast rod that I hardly use. I've had mixed success (ie backlashes) with these 2 combos. I want to make a a real effort to use my new Daiwa combo this year for as many applications as I can and finally get comfortable with baitcasters. I mostly fish from the bank and use T-rigs,C-rigs, Spinnerbaits, small swimbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwaters and want to use more jigs this year as well. I think my one with the 65 lb braid should be fine for frogging etc. What line should i put on my new reel so that I can use it for many applications? Any suggestions on the Kinetic and my Agressor setup as far as line or setup? I would also like to use these setups more often. Dave Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted May 12, 2018 Super User Posted May 12, 2018 I would suggest 40lb braid, or 15 or 17 mono, copoly or fluoro. I use the very same 6'10" Tatula rod for frogs, so I use 40lb braid. Someday, I will add a heavy rod for frogs and jigs and run 15-17lb (maybe occasionally 20lb) fluorocarbon on my Tatula SV I use with that rod but 40lb braid would still remain a viable option even if I didn't use it with frogs. Super User Angry John Posted May 12, 2018 Super User Posted May 12, 2018 40 braid is a good all around size. I use a lot of 12 and 15lb yhb. 14lb Berkeley xl for top water only on one rod. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 12, 2018 Super User Posted May 12, 2018 I'd recommend any copolymer line in #12 - #15 for your tatula CT for all around type. Hybrid is good, I use mostly Izorline now. Quote
Falkus Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Yo-Zuri has not failed me yet - I like its at 10/12lbs since their breaking strength are above normal Heck - my chatterbait line is at 12lbs Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 13, 2018 Super User Posted May 13, 2018 A little research turned up that the Quantum Burst has a composite frame. I wouldn't be using it as a frog reel. I gathered that the Kinetic PT is a pretty good reel at its price from a review I read written 5 years ago. The 20 lb. braid may be some of your problem. That light of a braid requires you to keep it pretty tight on the spool to keep it from digging in. Line may be a problem on the Browning Aggressor as well. I've not used that heavy of a fluorocarbon, but I know fluorocarbon lines have a fair amount of memory. Larger the line, the more the problem. Use a line conditioner on it. I assume toothy critters in your area is why you went with 15 lb. In my area I use a lot lighter. You bought a nice rod and reel. Add me to the list suggesting 40 lb. for braid. I use a lot of 12# monos and co-polymers. I like Siege, AN40, Big Game and McCoy Mean Green. I haven't tried all lines.....yet. Personally I prefer a mono or co-polymer for all around use. Izorline is a good line for abrasion resistance. However, it has more memory than most lines. Put it on my daughter's reel because she fishes Senkos all the time. She complained of the memory. Put on some Siege and haven't heard a complaint since. Quote

I’d also recommend McCoy Mean Green, especially if your having backlashing issues. This stuff casts and handles great. Quote
Dave Margerum Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to go with co-polymer> Quote
