EGbassing Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Just picked up a 1/4 oz. SK Red Eye Shad today. Caught a little one on my second cast, and hooked another one that got off. It's the perfect pond lure. Really easy to fish and seems to work well so far. It's a slower sink rate than the standard red eye shad, making it perfect for shallow water. Highly recommended. (Of course, catching one doesn't necessarily mean it's a good lure, because I was wearing my lucky crocs. I can catch a bass using a leaf while wearing those) 1 Quote
jr231 Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Any lure can be the perfect lure until your bass become conditioned to it. And they will! Good news for you is there are plenty of perfect lures to catch bass.. more than I personally have time to try. I like the red eye shad tho! One of the best value lipless on the market. Go find you somewhere deep and try that 1/2 oz out. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 11, 2018 Global Moderator Posted May 11, 2018 I like the 1/4oz when the shad are small and the bass are gorging on them. Great bait to give to someone when the trap bite is on but they can't operate a casting reel too because it works just fine on spinning gear. 1 Quote

I've seen a few dead gizzard shad in the past couple months and they were all in the 8" - 10" range, but there are a lot of minnows in the 1.5" to 2.5" range. Do you think the smaller bass would be feeding on those, or just shad? Quote
jr231 Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Bass are opportunistic predators. If it's vulnerable, and in the vicinity a bass will take it. Meaning they eat everything they can... Crickets , worms, bugs. Even small birds/ ducks and snakes. 2 Quote

Minnows, small shad, young of the year of any fish that live in the lake like panfish or bass, they can imitate whatever small baitfish might happen to be in the water at the time that a bass might happen to be feeding on. Super User NYWayfarer Posted May 12, 2018 Super User Posted May 12, 2018 I checked and I don’t have any Red Eye Shad in that size. All I have are 1/2 oz versions. I have to order some. When fishing 1/4 oz cranks I like the Leland Trout Magnet cranks. Bass love them as well! Quote
lonnie g Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 I love the red eyed shad on lay lake ,where fish target loads of shad. Spots usually slam it. Lots of fun and don’t miss many. I would think the smaller size would be good for a pond or lake with lots of small bait fish 1 Quote
Deeare Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Fish them in grass/weed areas. Let them sink into the grass and then rip them out. And repeat. Bass will crush it on the fall. 1 Quote
