Drew03cmc Posted June 15, 2018 Posted June 15, 2018 Ok, I'm wearing Buffs and don't like the constriction. I also have a full beard, so it's not ideal. More ideas please... Quote

Super User Mobasser Posted June 16, 2018 Super User Posted June 16, 2018 I received a fishing shirt for x Ms this year. I've been wearing that and it is full UV protection. A cap, sunscreen- sunglasses help a lot. Reapply sunscreen on longer trips. I've worked outside probably 50% of my life. I was laughed at wearing sunscreen 20 years ago on construction sites. Many guys never worried about this back then, and thought a dark tan looked cool. Now I'm 60 and don't have any problems that In aware of. It is a serious thing! Sounds like your on top of it. Good luck, and stay protected out there Quote

I have a 7 year old son and would like to get him one too but can't find anyone who makes kid sizes. Sorry about the delayed response. I got a 5 pack from salt armor and they seem to fit me and my boys without any issue. They are very stretchy. Another thing I just recently got into using are these. Keep them wet, wrapped around your neck, tucked into your shirt. These things are killer. https://www.froggtoggs.com/chilly-pad-33957/ Quote
cfrye11 Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 I almost always fish is long sleeve sun shirts, with a hat, sun glasses and a lot of times I'll have a mask but just to cover my neck. I make real effort to not get burned. Quote

Between that and the beard, my face never even really tans. On very bright days or when I am in my yak I button up the neck and add a buff as well, but only pull it up to my chin. The beard filling the buff out like a goiter looks as amazing as it sounds. ? 1 Quote
Smalls Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 I tried the Simms gloves, and I think SPF 50 is an exaggeration. They seemed great for a couple weeks, but after a rather long day on a very sunny day my hands were noticeably darker. And I hated that the fingers were so long. I had to roll them back. I went back back to the Cabela’s guidewear ones. Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted July 25, 2018 Super User Posted July 25, 2018 I've said this on another thread before. 25yrs ago, I was snickered at for putting on sunscreen working outside in bright sun and heat, on construction sites. Many guys didn't do this , preferring to get a super dark tann. I wonder how they are doing now? I'm sure many have skin problems. I would use good quality sunscreen, and take it a step further with some of the newer UV rated shirts and pants. Always wear a hat or cap too. And, reapply as you need it. Quote
Neil McCauley Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 The most important spots are the cheeks, nose and ears- that is where basal cell carcinoma, the most common skin cancer, will usually develop when we get older. Best protection for those areas is a buff imo. Quote
moguy1973 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 I am super fair skinned and I burn if I sit under a fluorescent bulb too long sometimes (just kidding) and I really hate messing with applying sunscreen every hour or so. It's messy, greases up your hands, puts unwanted scents on your baits, etc. So I go all out and wear long fishing pants (the ones that are convertible so I can unzip the lower part when I'm done fishing), long sleeve tech shirts (although I do sometimes wear the button up lightweight fishing shirts), a baseball cap, lightweight fingerless gloves, and a face shield up over most of my face when I fish now. The only place that gets sunscreen is my nose, forehead, and cheeks. Even when it's super hot outside. I'd rather have to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated than get sunburned/skin cancer. People look at me and ask if I'm crazy for wearing all that in the dead of summer and actually it's really not that hot. Most of the clothing now is so well made that it keeps you cool by not clinging to your body and it wicks your sweat to keep you cool. I'm really a fan of the Magellan stuff that Academy sells. Well priced and just as good as the HUK or Columbia stuff. On 6/15/2018 at 9:39 AM, NHBull said: .......... If I may expand the discussion, what summer gloves are folks wearing......I hate sunscreen I have a pair of Simms that I'll wear but not a fan of the open palm. Seems to like to attract stray treble hooks. I picked up a pair of Outdoor Research gloves off Amazon that I like better because they cover the palm and they also have nice grippy rubber dots on the palm that helps grip the rod handle. Unfortunately it looks like they don't make the style of OR gloves I currently have Quote
Yumeya Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Simms buffs are the best I have used, columbia PFG is the best fit long sleeve shirt for me followed by underarmour. As for gloves, I love the Outdoor Research palmless gloves, they are built excellent and have a excellent warranty. I do need some kind of pants but usually end up wearing shorts and flip flops.... CrankFate Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 You have to protect yourself from the sun. I’ve had about a dozen “precancerous” moles removed from over 40 years of sun exposure. Normally, I’d say neutrogena spray sunblock is the best. It does last about 10 hours, but it’s been recalled. Copper tone sport spray is OK or Aveeno soy sunblock cream is good and all 3 of these do not repel fish. I use sunblock, a buff a hat and long sleeves or arm sleeves. Because I get a lot of sun. To the point that I have a mole on the palm of my right hand (no not hair. A mole.). The sun is dangerous. Cover up. It keeps me looking young and pretty. That is just as important, IMO. Quote
