Baz. Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Been looking to add a sub 2 oz swimbait rod to the setup. And since i prefer not to take out more than 2 rods at a time, figure i should make it work as my flipping rod as well. What im currently thinking is a 7'6" Dobyns Sierra H/F with a Shimano Curado 200k. Thoughts on that setup? also for the Curado if anyone has experience/thoughts on going with the 7.4:1 or the 8.5:1 tips would be appreciated. And as always if you have something else you think would do just as well ill take the advice. Price wise I'd like to keep the combo around or under $350 though obviously less is all good by me. Thanks in advance Quote

Though i guess mag heavy should have less of that problem... Still when i say up to 2 ounces i mean ill be really throwing some 1.75 oz lures on this rod. 735 is rated at 1.5 oz, had any problems throwing slightly over it? Quote

I would not suggest it then. Heaviest I've went on it is a 3/4 ounce weight with full size brush hog and flipping hook. Quote
jtesch Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Daiwa Tatula 7’4. Frog/slop rod perfect for your needs Quote

Loving my Tatula LT spinning reel which might be whats grabbing my attention a bit more. Ill keep it on my list and do a bit of research. Will say though, and while it isnt nearly the most important factor, I typically prefer the feel of full length handle. Also usually cork but have felt a few foam handles i like. I have large hands (palms in particular) and rarely like how the narrow rod section fits in my hand. Quote

Foam sections look long enough to be comfortable. Anybody used? I see some tip breaking problems with lighter models... any problems with the heavy frog model? Also.. You guys have any experience with the Daiwa Tatula 150? Looking at that or Shimano Curado 200k. Leaning towards Tatula since its a tatula rod and all and i do love my Tatula LT. That being said also curious to test more thats out there and have always heard great things about the curado. Quote
nd1225 Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 No experience with the new Tat 150, but from what I hear, it essentially replaced the Tat HD, so from my understanding, it should fit your needs. Quote

I'd get one for my frog/swimbait rod for the longer handle but no discounts as it's a brand new offering. Quote
Baz. Posted May 10, 2018 Author Posted May 10, 2018 Ended up finding a Tatula 7'4 frog for $120 on amazon so ordered it. Hopefully price isnt too good to be true. Also ended up going with a Shimano Curado 200k. Thought process is I could always move over the curado and get a tatula 150 when deals start coming around. Also i've wanted to see what all the curado hype was about. Will let you guys know how i feel about them after a month or two of use. 1 Quote

I own 3 Tatula's, all but one came from Amazon and were far below the MSRP of $149.99 that you'll find at retail sites. Some people have complained about the shipping packaging that Amazon does, and while not the greatest, none of mine came broken. Not much risk, as Amazon returns are free if they do get damaged. The 6'9 ML/F is a mega bargain at $71 (backordered though). Quote

ib_of_the_damned Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 I would recommend the iRod Fred's Magic Stick (754C), I use that for my 2oz and under swimbaits. Handles them perfect. It can also double/triple as a frog rod and flipping rod if you so choose. I have mine paired with a Con cept A 6:6:1 with the deep spool and have it filled with 15lb Izorline XXX Super Co-Polymer as my small swimbait rod. Very light and balanced. Quote

It's ML/R, not ML/F and it's listed as the 8-14lb Black model in the drop down size list. I use this for my poppers and jerkbaits. Tip and rod length are fine, the only thing I would change is the butt size. It's just a tad too long for my taste and hits my forearm when I'm popping/jerking downward. Quote

I have a FMS and if you can deal with the handle length it is a great rod across it's rating. It for sure does not like a BBZ 50 Rat at ~2.5oz, but throws a 2oz soft swimbait just fine. I have the same reel on mine, but it 8:1 and have it spooled with 40lb braid. I use it for now as a gp heavy kayak rod for bass and I am going to bring it along with a Plopper 130 tied on when I am trolling for stripers for the off chance I get a shot at a topwater feed. I am debating getting like 2-3" lopped of the butt for easier kayak use, it's a nice versatile rod but that long butt kills me. Quote

I decided to go with the 6.6:1 so I could slow down for tossing swimbaits. I used to have an Abu Garcia Orra Winch 5.4:1 on there but when I decided to switch up baits one day and use soft plastics, I didn't like how slow the reel was. I figured 6.6:1 would be a good middle ground reel speed. As for chopping off 2-3" off the butt, wouldn't that mess with the balance of the rod and void the warranty? Quote

I figured 6.6:1 would be a good middle ground reel speed. As for chopping off 2-3" off the butt, wouldn't that mess with the balance of the rod and void the warranty? I bought it as a pure frog rod, but then found I like swimbaits more so the Irod got moved to GP kayak duty and I bought a different combo for swimbaits. I am somewhat souring on super fast reels but it's not worth selling it. I am not really worried about the warranty, I have caught enough fish on it that any breakage is going to be my fault at this point. The balance issue is real, but I would have the builder add back the weight that was removed plus a little to make it balance tip up. At some point I am going to buy a dowel rod and mount my reel on it with tape and start cutting it shorter like 1/2" at a time to see where the sweet spot is for handle length. As it is right now it's painful to fish it for long seated as the butt hits my PFD and it makes me keep my arms at a weird angle on the retrieve. If they made a 6'8" version of the FMS with the same power and taper I would buy two of them, it's such a good rod but the ergonomics really kill it for me. With kayak fishing surging in popularity I hope to see someone start making rods designed for that application. Quote
