The Jig is quickly becoming my favorite bait

A brown jig with black trailer has been killing it for me this week. The bass have finally come up shallow on my home lake and I found a stretch of 100 yards that bass have been loaded up in. I have had trouble with hook ups though. I have lost probably 2 out of every 5 strikes because of a poor hook set. I switched rods though to a medium heavy, fast action, with a fast reel and that has helped me land more fish.

Driving the hook home on a jig requires a strong hook set, a rod with enough backbone, and heavy enough line to absorb the shock of the hookset.

I think next time out I am gonna use my heavy rod and see if that makes a difference.

What type of line are you using? I recommend braid for most jig/trailer presentations and sticking with the Med/Hvy rod.  It’ll give you the most sensitivity and most positive hook sets. Fluorocarbon would be second on my list, but manageability keeps me from using it.

I was throwing 12lb flouro yesterday. They have been finicky as heck up until now so I wanted to use something that they wouldn't see.

 

I have 50lb sufix braid on my flipping rod with the 12lb flouro leader. Should I go to that next time out and see if that helps with my hook up ratio?

Either go heavy rod with braid or look into some jigs with lighter wire hooks.

3/8th oz. ~ 1/2 oz. arky or football jig ; 7' MH rod ; 6:3:1 to 7:3:1 bait cast reel ; #15 lb. FC line (#40 lb. braid to #15 lb. FC leader is also an option ) .

Go straight braid or straight flouro. I don't like fishing jigs on braid, it's a mental thing for me, I'd rather fish them on copolymer.

same here. even though it has been debunked many times. I still prefer a copolymer or  flouro  line on a slow moving bait.

i fish it better, because I have more confidence the fish will not be line shy. old beliefs die hard.

No mention of this in your OP. Definitely want to go heavy/braid. Also would suggest trimming and thinning your weed guard when not fishing around wood.

 No worries. I switched to my heavy rod with 50lb braid and a 14lb flouro leader and was 2 for 2 on strikes yesterday with it.  Both were solid hook sets. I guess my Med/Heavy rod just wasn't quite quick enough.

jig fishing - sharp hooks - don't be afraid to fine hone your hooks - I know we have hooks that are incredibly sharp but if the jig has a heavy hook I'll touch it up with a diamond hone

i am kinda cheap so i go with 30lbs braid and a 15 to 30 lbs floro leader at about 2 to 4 ft. i will use a med hvy rod 6'8''. 

i love my jigs. in the channels i will toss one let if slow sink and walk it though about 30 ft and bring back. have to stay in the bumps and trash thou.
