All right guys, I tried looking for this but can't quite find what I'm looking for. So I've been throwing the spro rat lately 40 size and I'm loving it, and I'm looking into getting a new rod that I can use the rat 40 but also use it as a multi-purpose rod for spinnerbaits and Spooks things like that. Would a rod that's rated up to 1 oz, more specifically a Dobyns either Colt or possibly Fury 704 ( heavy)or *** *** (medium heavy)be good for it? The one ounce spro rat would be the heaviest thing I intend to be throwing on this specific rod, but it will see a lot of water on that rod. Anybody throw the 40 on a rod rated up to one oz?

Rod ratings are subjective and are only to be used as a rough guideline. I have MH rods that are rated up to 1.25oz and I’ve thrown a 1oz bait and it handled it like crap. I haven’t owned a 704 for some time now but I remember it having a soft tip and to me it would feel overloaded from what I remember it fished like.

The ideal all around Rod is IROD IRG754 Freds Magic stick; rated 1/2-2 oz lures.

1 oz lures like the rat 40 and whopper plopper 110 are the heaviest I throw.

I use a Lews TP-1 speedstick 7’3” MH mod, rated 1/2 oz to 1 and 3/8 oz works great for me.

Also would work well for the other lures you mention within these ratings, plus various crankbaits. Very happy with this rod.

If you want Dobyns, I'd suggest a 5 power.... I have a 734 and a 744, neither would be happy at all throwing 1oz+

I have thrown the 40 size on a Dobyns 735(fury in this case), it did fairly well.

kistler 7'10 MOD might be real nice for those Rats....

Thanks for the heads up on the 5 power. Sounds like dobyns are on the softer side of the spectrum

I've used a 6'6" MH Abu Garcia Vendetta (Ultra stout rod) for the 30 Rat and 90/110/130 WP and it did great until it snapped. Although the BBZ-Rat looks like a swimbait it's all wake bait, which is a good thing. You can walk it like a spook, straight burn it (until it blows out), or burn-stop-burn-stop. I haven't caught a bass on it yet but in the morning dawn colour I've netted dozens of northerns. I bought a Fury 735 2 weeks back, it'll be a topwater/swimbait/jig rod for me. It's rated as a Mag Heavy (1/4-1.5oz, which is a huge range), but knowing Dobyns is on the soft side, it's probably closer to a heavy rod or a MH to some. I may try throwing a R2S 168 s-waver on it to see how it loads.

I have a Rat 40 that I haven't thrown yet, but plan on using with my StC Mojo Bass 6'8 MH/F (rated 3/8 to 1 oz). PM me and let me know where you are in southern NH. I'm in Kittery ME. You're welcome to try it out.

funny you mention that rod, I tried a 40 sized rat on it. and landed a few fish on it, but I lost about as many. Needs a softer/longer tip imo...

worked pretty good for jigs and worms

One of my buddies actually have the same rod so I could try it on his. Appreciate the offer though
