Chughes37 Posted May 8, 2018 Posted May 8, 2018 In need of some advice! Ive been fishing at a pond that has heavy moss just about everywhere I look. Instead of fishing around it, I thought I’d try to fish in it! Overall the pond is pretty shallow. Where I’m noticing the most cover, the water depth range is 3ft to 10ft. I picked out a rod (G Loomis GLX 954c FPR). The only jigs in my aresanal are siebert jigs but own no flipping jigs. I know I need something heavy enough to get through the thick mats of moss but considering how shallow the water is, I don’t want to go too heavy so I maximize the presentation on the fall. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 8, 2018 Super User Posted May 8, 2018 You DO NOT select jig weight base on water depth! A 2# bass can stop a 1 oz jig from hitting bottom in your scenario. 1 Quote

sully420 Posted May 8, 2018 Posted May 8, 2018 Thats what ya need. At least 3/4 oz fast fall is good you want to be able to punch through the cover fast and keep doing it. The bass can get it befor it hits bottom. But im biased i only use light jigs for dock skipping and really cold water. I also really like dirty jigs they punch well and I like the hook up ratio. 2 Quote

Chughes37 Posted May 9, 2018 Author Posted May 9, 2018 I appreciate the replies! I’m stuck between dirty jigs punching jig or sieberts tungsten punch rig. Also I’m questioning my rod selection. Which rod would be a good all around flip/pitch/punch rod... G. Loomis GLX 895 FPR or the 954 FPR? If you don’t know the specs the 895 FPR is 7’5 XH (3/8-1 1/4oz) the 954 is 7’11 Heavy (1/4-1oz) Quote
Super User Angry John Posted May 9, 2018 Super User Posted May 9, 2018 No need for the lower end on a heavy cover rod and the top end is important. If this is a punch setup a 5 power would be my choice. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 9, 2018 Super User Posted May 9, 2018 I'm only interested in; does this rod have the tip speed & backbone to instantly turn that bass's head & get her coming up on the hook set. Control the head... control the body! Quote
RyneB Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 If you want a true punching setup. Get yourself a IROD Genesis Bubs punch rod, some Reins or Hawg Tech tungsten in 1 ounce, some BB Cricket, and some punch skirts and Gambler Why Nots. Also, whatever straight shank heavy duty flipping hook you prefer. Quote
