TxHawgs Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 If the spinnerbaits I want come in 3/8 & 1/2 should I go w the 1/2 to burn it just under the surface? I figure the extra weight will help keep it down allowing me to reel it faster? Thanks guys. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 Go with the heavier weight for a burner. Don't overlook blade choice though, a good burner should have small willow blades. 2 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted May 7, 2018 Super User Posted May 7, 2018 Regardless of your choice, remember to account for the trailer....... ....to answer your question, you can run either at any depth, it just takes a couple seconds to get the 3/8 down there..... When choosing the size, consider water displacement over achieving a certain depth . Quote
Super User Munkin Posted May 7, 2018 Super User Posted May 7, 2018 Blade configuration counts as much as weight. Smaller blades on a heavier body is what you are looking for. Allen 3 Quote
TxHawgs Posted May 7, 2018 Author Posted May 7, 2018 Got it, forgot about bigger blades more lift. But out of curiosity know when and why do I go w a 3/8oz? Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 7, 2018 Super User Posted May 7, 2018 Just a dumb Coonass's observation ? One can control how deep or shallow the spinnerbait runs under the surface by simply raising or lowering the rod tip. Speeding up or slowing down the retrieve rate also effects depth. 1 Quote
rangerjockey Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 I like to throw whatever blade matches the size on the bait.. In general,on Table Rock in the clear water I throw either a 1/4oz or the war eagle screamin eagle which is a 1/2 oz bait on a 1/4 oz. frame . If the water gets really dirty I go to a painted blade. The screamin eagle burns as well as any. Quote
rboat Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 Personally, I switched to all 1/2 oz spinnerbaits. They cast farther, usually attract larger fish, and as mentioned above you can run at any depth with rod position and speed of retrieve. 2 Quote

I burn 3/4oz spinners with rod-tip held high. 1 Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted May 8, 2018 Super User Posted May 8, 2018 It's common you may find a 3/8" is a willow and a Colorado and a 1/2oz is a double willow for burning, and generally if I am slow rolling them especially this time of year, the smaller the better so I would agree 1/2 for burning. Super User scaleface Posted May 8, 2018 Super User Posted May 8, 2018 A couple of decades back I was having one of those days where I was having a difficult time putting the puzzle together . I was being skunked on a beautiful summer day under good conditions . I was pretty sure the fish were right there in the vegetation but could not get one to bite. I reasoned they were getting to good of a look at my offerings so I started burning a spinnerbait through the grass as fast as my Ambassasauer with 4.6 to 1 gear ratio would go. It wasnt long before I hooked up and then another ... I dont remember what spinnerbait I used that day , could have been a Fleck Weed Wader as I was fond of them . Anyway , when the fishing should be better than the results I'm getting , its a technique that I rely on . Quote
