Having worked for a number of years as a Trainer in the industry, racing deaths are a sad, sad thing.  Very few understand the science that goes into track management.  It is a complicated mixture of drainage, soil, clay and sand and is usually tailored to the climate the track is located in as far as combinations.  We scratched many a horse when we felt the track we were racing on was dangerous.  While some horses excel in wet conditions (we called them mudders), a track not designed for heavy amounts of rain will oftentimes have "the bottom fall out" where holes or soft spots in the strata develop.  Keeping in mind these animals are putting excessive amounts of force on leg bones that are the size of pencils, the risks of serious injury increase greatly with track conditions.  Sadly for most a leg break or bad injury is a death sentence for these animals.  It's the economics of racing.  That being said, I witnessed a lot more egregious practices on horses during my time in the industry.  It's a very good thing they shut the track until they can get it back to a safe condition.

from Twitter: Dan Blacker:The training track was back open and in good shape this morning @santaanitapark. All the horses under my care went to the track and trained well

and this

from face book
Santa Anita is tentatively scheduled to reopen its main track for light training Monday and could resume racing on March 21-22 as an investigation continues into the cause of 21 equine fatalities since late December

sat the Rebel Stks.

"Jennifer Hoyt, media relations manager for Oaklawn Park, said track officials agreed Tuesday evening to run multiple divisions even if entries didn't reach the previously announced magic number of 20 horses. They wound up with 19 total.

Hoyt said the split was made regardless "out of consideration for the horsemen and the fans."

The Rebel originally carried a $1 million purse and awarded Derby qualifying points on a 50-20-10-5 scale. Now, the flights will run with separate $750,000 purses, and the races will award 75 percent of the original points, on a 37.5, 15, 7.5 and 3.75 scale to the Top 4 finishers.

Horses with common connections were split -- that means unbeaten Bob Baffert-trained 3-year-olds Game Winner and Improbable won't face one another -- and others were sorted randomly into a flight"

What a great act of sportsmanship, or perhaps very enlightened business, on the part of Oaklawn's management.

Full entries for Saturday should be available later this afternoon.

The 1 1/16-mile Rebel tops a card with two other noteworthy stakes, the Azeri (G2) for older fillies and mares expected to include Grade 1 winners Elate, Midnight Bisou, Shamrock Rose and Eskimo Kisses; and the Essex Handicap led by veteran Giant Expectations
