Wurming67 Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 I want to get into frog fishing never gave it a chance I see alot of people on here posting about booyah pad crasher. Is there a certain technique you use? I fish in shallow water, stained, heavy grass so it seems a hollow body frog would be good for that situation?I got a 7ft mh rod with a bps 2 /6.8.1 and 50 lb power braid is that a good set up for frog fishing? Thanks guys!! 1 Quote
bagofdonuts Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Your in frog heaven down there. Best retrieve for me has been walking the dog. Same retrieve as a spook. A loop knot will help the action. 1 Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 First, the booyah pad crasher is the way to go way better hookup ratio. Your gear will work perfectly so don’t let people tell you that you need a heavy I have always used a mh and have never had a problem. Just expirament for retrives and and you’ll get it. 1 1 Quote
Dtrombly Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Pad Crasher is easily my favorite frog. I'd get the popping version, it can be walked very easily so you get the best of both worlds in one frog. I frogged with a MH last year and it worked great. 1 Quote
J.Vincent Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Yes, this is a very capable frogging combo and should cover 90% of the situations an angler may face when casting Hollow Body Frogs in Florida. Only reason to step up to a Heavy Fast, would be for punching through slop or casting frogs to the back pockets of a Pad field; and even then the Heavy Fast is only adding a bit of insurance. Other than that you are set with everything you mentioned and your casting will be better on the Medium Heavy ! 1 Quote
Wurming67 Posted May 5, 2018 Author Posted May 5, 2018 Thanks guys been you tubing walking the frog looks like just gonna take some practice,Zell Rowland does his frog a little different like its hopping( ie up/down) 1 Quote
FishDewd Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Sounds good to me, but I don't know a great deal about frogging. I've been dabbling with that myself. I just need a shorter rod. I've been using an inshore Lew's plastic/topwater rod (TP1) that's a medium-fast. Not sure it quite has the backbone to set the frog hooks (but I would sure try if it got a hit!), and at 6'9" it's a little too long for me to walk a frog real well. I can pop it along real well like you describe though with the up/down motion (poppin' pad crasher). Think I need about a 6' rod ideally to walk it real well. I can get a little walk going sometimes, but I have to have it more at an angle from me to do it. 1 Quote
J.Vincent Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Also check out Dean Rojas, and how he fishes that frog....he also fishes it with a head up bobbing action , but I've never been able to recreate this in my fishing....but he is another one of those Frog Specialists ! 1 Quote
EGbassing Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 I'll try to answer all of your questions. First of all, yep, a frog is about perfect for your situation, and that setup sounds fine. I would definitely go with a booyah poppin' pad crasher; never had any issues with it, and the price is decent. As for colors, you only need two (in my opinion) - black for sunny days, and a natural color (green and white) for an overcast day. Lastly, I use the "walk the dog" technique 99% of the time. Make sure you're popping the slack in your line and not pulling it on a tight line. Here's a tutorial video on that technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyUmnL_Mei8 Good luck, and if you have any further questions, I'd be glad to help. 1 Quote

Thanks for info!!I almost bought popping pad crusher but I thought the regular one would be better for me me fishing these grass mats Quote
Super User Angry John Posted May 5, 2018 Super User Posted May 5, 2018 Lots of good frogs out there, I like the spro Bronze eye and the r2s bully wa. 50 or 65 is standard frogging line. I normally use 832 but trying the 4 carrier pp to cUT the vedge a little better. The heavy vs mh debate may be dictated by your situation. A heavy might be good if you are casting into stuff you can't get your boat into. 1 Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted May 5, 2018 Posted May 5, 2018 Spro popping frog on MH 6'6 with 65lb line is my standard frog setup. Works good for me, killer in the St.Johns River, Fla 1 Quote
Super User tcbass Posted May 5, 2018 Super User Posted May 5, 2018 I'll say that I never had a lot of luck with hollow body frogs. Caught a lot on Ragetail Toads either on the retrieve or letting it sink. Made a homemade Teckel Sprinker Frog from a Spro hollowbody and killed it last year. If I was going to do frogs I'd try either the new Booyah Toadrunner or make your own Teckels. For me the tail just added so many more bites. 1 Quote

BuzzHudson19c Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 Savage gear lily ninja is a very good inexpensive frog. Bought a few last year and it quickly became my favorite. Quote
Wurming67 Posted May 7, 2018 Author Posted May 7, 2018 One thing I learned today on water it's not easy walking the frog on those grass mats ,I was just moving it slowly and stopping and pop the rod tip up to have it move got a few that way on it that grass is thick.... 1 Quote

On mats I don’t walk the frog, I just make short quick jerks of the rod tip to get the frog to scurry across. I also have luck with just burning the frog across the mat. In open water I’ll walk it but I don’t fish frogs in open water that often. Over mats I try to get the frog to make as much noise as possible. If the fish keep missing your frog and the mat is thick follow up with a punch rig. I use frogs as a search bait to find mats I want to pick apart and punch. 1 Quote

I figured that out real quick that it's probably not a good idea to walk the frog on the mats I was just inching it ,stop for a minute, let it flutter etc gotta a couple 2 lbers doing that so that was cool, where I fish there is a big competition for those grass mats between the junk fish ie Oscars, gar, myans etc and the bass had alot of junk fish snapping at frog on the mats Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted May 7, 2018 Super User Posted May 7, 2018 I fish frogs on 40lb braid on my MH/F rod, so with 50lb braid you are good too. My favorite frogs are the 2.25" Love Targets, but the Pad Crashers are great to keep on hand as backups as well as they're good and cheap. 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted May 8, 2018 Super User Posted May 8, 2018 I should also add that frogs are really fun to fish. Quote
