Super User slonezp Posted May 3, 2018 Super User Posted May 3, 2018 I stop at the grocery store on my way home from work. The bill is $39 and change. I give the cashier a 20, a 10, and a roll of quarters. "I don't think we can accept a roll of quarters as payment" "If you want, I can remove them from the roll and you can count them all" "Yes, I think that would be best" 2 1 1 Quote
OCdockskipper Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 Were you tempted to break open the roll of quarters on his/her forehead? Wait, are you using the term "roll of quarters" as a euphemism? If so, you are a dirty old man!! 2 2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 4, 2018 Super User Posted May 4, 2018 I would suppose the clerk is held responsible for any shortages and your payment offer blew his mind. He was probably thinking that if the roll is one quarter short it is up to him to make it up. Just my two cents. 2 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted May 4, 2018 Super User Posted May 4, 2018 If rolled in paper, I get it. If rolled in plastic, ya can’t fix stupid 1 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted May 4, 2018 Super User Posted May 4, 2018 Maybe they wanted to count the quarters to give you your dollar in change!! Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted May 4, 2018 Super User Posted May 4, 2018 Story popped up on my facebook this morning, person paid with 2 rolls of dimes. Clerk did not check because he was busy, person had rolled pennies instead.... If I was a clerk no way I would accept payment if I could not physically count it. No way to tell what is rolled up in there. 2 Quote

No way to tell what is rolled up in there. I work in retail, and a customer paid for his item with two $5 rolls of dimes. After he left, the manager came over and said not to take them in rolls anymore because there’s a good chance they’re short. We busted them open and started counting. Lo and behold, both rolls were short and the store had to eat the loss. So this is a pretty common practice in retail. Not because customers aren’t trustworthy, but because a lot of people don’t know how to count. 2 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted May 7, 2018 Super User Posted May 7, 2018 What's a quarter? How much is that in Apple Pay? 1 Quote

Super User Choporoz Posted May 7, 2018 Super User Posted May 7, 2018 I've actually been more concerned about the actual cost of personal tech than the risk of losing appreciation for money. Cell, cable, internet, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sirius... probably close to 5 grand a year just in my small household....its nuts 2 1 Quote

Super User Choporoz Posted May 8, 2018 Super User Posted May 8, 2018 I've taken to keeping a small stack of singles in my console, because I'd commonly get to a park entrance or kayak launch that I don't have pass for and not have any cash on me at all. That trip back out to find an ATM really blows when you're ready to hit the water. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted May 8, 2018 Author Super User Posted May 8, 2018 Because of all the new found knowledge I obtained from this thread, I decided to try it out. Went to the dunkin donuts drive thru this morning. Paid the young lady with 240 loose pennies. The look on her face was priceless. Thanks all!!! 1 Quote

Dad always talked about using a slide rule but he never showed me how ? Quote
