Lonnie Clemens Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Hi Folks, Yesterday, I decided I would start planning on the type of outboard I wanted as a retirement gift. It was going to be an electric start 9.9 Johnson-a 2018 model. lol Got on the internet to check out the prices and couldn't find one new Johnson. I guess I am oblivious. Have been seeing Johnson's and Evinrude's on the lake. But didn't know they folded up. I guess Mercury is our only American made company left. Lonnie Quote

Super User Scott F Posted May 3, 2018 Super User Posted May 3, 2018 Smaller Mercury outboards, are made in Japan by Tohatsu. Quote
Lonnie Clemens Posted May 3, 2018 Author Posted May 3, 2018 Just had a dealer tell me that Tohatsu is making smaller Evinrudes too. I was living in the good old days and didn't know it. How could we let this happen in America? I don't want to be seen by my river rat friends with a Tohatsu motor. 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted May 3, 2018 Super User Posted May 3, 2018 OMC made both Evinrude and Johnson outboards, the difference being Johnson were sold by authorized dealerships, Evinrude sold by any retailer. When OMC was sold, the Johson name was retired. Tom 1 Quote

Tohatsu is Japan's oldest manufacturer of outboard motors tracing their roots back to 1922! I've been running Tohatsu for about 15 yrs, for 50 hp & below Johnyrude can't compete. 3 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted May 4, 2018 Super User Posted May 4, 2018 Well, I run a Yamaha, and you're hard pressed to find any piece of fishing equipment that doesn't have an imported component in it. Even American rods have guides that more than likely are imported. I'm all for "Buy American" but in the fishing world that's almost impossible. ? 3 Quote
Lonnie Clemens Posted May 4, 2018 Author Posted May 4, 2018 Thank you for the responses. Now I know more about what is going on. Just talked to an Evinrude dealer in Rock Island, Illinois. He said the 15 h.p. and below are also made by Tohatsu. I am sure they are good motors. Quote

They have one too, even if they don't know it. 1 Quote

Super User Catt Posted May 5, 2018 Super User Posted May 5, 2018 Some of the Tohatsu & Mercury smaller to mid range are made by Honda. I have a 40 hp Tohatsu that was made by Honda 1 Quote
