Brian Schram Posted May 2, 2018 Author Posted May 2, 2018 lol IKR?? I was truly shocked because of the area she was in. We get 7+ lbers out on the Canadian side of St Clair but not really in this area. It's a known area but I spent a little more time on it and found something special. And then THIS happens lol. 4 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted May 2, 2018 Super User Posted May 2, 2018 So just to be clear -- we are looking at a picture of you holding a new lake record smallmouth on St. Clair??? There are no words... I mean, "congratulations" is a word but, somehow that doesn't seem sufficient. 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted May 2, 2018 Super User Posted May 2, 2018 Congratulations for catching a 9.7 pound smallmouth bass. It is a beauty and bigger than most bass fisherman's home state PB largemouth. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted May 2, 2018 Super User Posted May 2, 2018 Fantastic fish! Is there a photo where you aren't holding it out toward the camera so we get a more realistic view? 4 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 3, 2018 Super User Posted May 3, 2018 Giant smallmouth! 9.7 lb Smallie Isn't far off Michigan or Ontario records. Was the weight validated by DNR? Congratualtions. Tom Quote

Because it's only CIR season I didn't spend a lot of time with the fish and got her back in quick. But we weighd it 4 times over at 9-7. I'll post the scale pic I need to downsize it it says 1 Quote
Brian Schram Posted May 3, 2018 Author Posted May 3, 2018 Here's the scale pic y'all. I swear I could have almost put my fist in that things mouth. Looked like a 7lb largemouth mouth lol Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 3, 2018 Super User Posted May 3, 2018 Super Sized Smallie for Sure ~ Congrats on the great catch and your new PB. You may be stuck on that one for a while. Certainly a nice 'problem' to have. . . . A-Jay Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted May 3, 2018 Super User Posted May 3, 2018 Awesome, catch of a lifetime! Grats! Quote
Super User scaleface Posted May 3, 2018 Super User Posted May 3, 2018 What did you think when you first hooked it ? Quote

At fist all I saw was the belly and it looked bigger than a 7lb class fish to me. It was WIDE just maxed out. But I didnt really get a good look at the length. And when they are that far it's just hard to judge. Once she got to the boat i saw the length and freaked out. I was concerned about the tube coming out if I horsed her but I also know that the longer a tube is in a fish of that size the more chance you have of losing the fish. So I just kept the line tight and got her in as quick as I could. My partner had trouble landing her because her tail was so large. He had to like scoop her in over the gunnell. But it wasnt really until I picked her up off the bow I knew what I had just caught. It just felt very very different putting my thumb in her mouth. The eyes were bulging much bigger and the body just kept on going down. It was unbelievable. That's when I made a call to the shop about the state record. But when I set the hook yeah it felt big like a 5-6 lber but I would have never guessed that big until she came up. Lesson learned too. Always fight big smallmouth like it's a 9lber cuz it could be!!! 2 Quote

Here in Florida the whole bass ( from the mouth to the last tip of the tail) has to show on the scale if we want to submit the picture to the TrophCatch program. Also the hand cannot touch the metal that weighs the bass. Lots of bass have been disqualified from the TrophyCatch program because of people submitting partial weighing pictures but it might be different in your state. Quote

It's only Catch and immediate release here so I did not spend much time. Especially when I found out that it missed the state record by some ounces. I wasn't planning on submitting it anywhere just Sharing with anglers 1 Quote

Regardless your smallmouth bass is a beauty. 1 Quote

Super User senile1 Posted May 9, 2018 Super User Posted May 9, 2018 Words fail me! Amazing freak of a fish! Congratulations. That beats our state record smallie by 2 lbs 5 oz. Quote
Brian Schram Posted May 13, 2018 Author Posted May 13, 2018 Hey all good some believe it and some don't lol. It was a good enough picture for the guy that has the current Ohio state record so that's good enough for me. I don't think many have even seen a 9lb smallmouth yo really judge 2 Quote
