Bassnajr Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Hey fellow bassers.... I have a Motorguide 37 lb. trollling motor on the front of my bass boat. The Fisher boat and this motor are late 80's early 90's vintage. The trolling motor heats up and shuts off when put on the #5 (power mode). Sometimes it pops the breaker, other times it just shuts off til it cools down.Tthere is a Humminbird fish finder on the same circut. Any ideas on what could be happening?? Thanks, bassinajr Quote
TopDog Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Check all your wires, Same thing was happening to my cousin. PM sent. Quote
Spencer W Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Has the motor always had this issue or just start? I would inspect your wiring and make sure it is proper gauge for the amount of current for the trolling motor. It would be best to have a secondary battery for the depth finder to power from. If wiring is proper size and in good condition I would speculate the trolling motor to be the problem? Quote
jim payne Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 The age of the unit would be my guess. The other stuuf on the battery should not be any problem with the motor getting hot. If the unit is hooked direct to the battery then the only thing to check is the connectors really need to be cleaned and tightened really well and if the cables look old and cracked they might need to be replaced and if the circuit breaker is older then you probably want to replace it. Besides those things the only other cause would be the motor itself is the problem. Good luck. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted October 25, 2007 Super User Posted October 25, 2007 Check the old harness for corosion and such. I don't know the condition of your wiring harness. I am assuming that you have bass boat where wires are run that you can't see. A loose wingnut on battery can cause heat build up also. Graphs operate on mV now days, so the chance of the sonar unit causing problem is very slim. Some times its the age of the unit and magnet, the magnet is the motor, the heart of the trolling motor. More heat means more current draw. More heat is caused by less resistance, normally with boats and electronics, with corrosion, you have less voltage, with normally won't allow you to operate things like a graph. With more current and heat, thats normally a sign of the motor going bad or loose connection. Have you opened the top of the trolling motor to observe the circuit board inside. TM's are different, some have hand control for speed and some are foot controlled. Over heating will show up, you should be able to smell if the PCB is going bad. Normally, the rheostat won't be the cause, but will show some sign of burning. Matt Quote
Toon Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 does the trolling motor get hot to the touch? Quote
bassnleo Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 You mentioned the breaker popping? Along with some of the other suggestions regarding wiring, you may want to up to a higher amp breaker. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted October 28, 2007 Super User Posted October 28, 2007 You could very well have a lower unit on the tmotor needing repair. Quote
StatosDadRI Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 BassinAJR, I should have a complete late 90's Motorguide 36lb except the mount and pedal we could rebuild that this winter or sooner if needed. I have rewired a few friends boats and could give you a hand with that problem. Quote
frogtog Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 I have had a problem similar to this and it was my battery, it had a dead cell in it. Quote
NBR Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Have you checked the prop shat for weeds, mono etc/ Quote
