Lure knocker/retriever

Do you use any commercial lure retriever or do you make your own?  I have been fishing  a lot of rock and wood from shore and losing a bait a day is getting pricey.  Looking at making or purchasing one.  Let me know what I should look for/make.

I love Big Ugly Plug Knockers (ebay.)  However, I'm not certain how well they'd work from the bank.  They work best when the line is as close to straight up and down as possible.

I use the bass pro lure retriever with the extra "chains"

 

I also have 2 of these as I have had to use my lure retriever to get my lure retriever back.

This pole looks like it would work better than a line type lure retriever from the bank. Just not sure you could get high enough on the bank to make a line retriever work properly.

I have a purchased one for boating, and a smaller DIY for my float tube. They are pretty simple: a weight, an open-able clip to clip on your line, and mine has short lengths of chain. Used mine just the other day.

All you need is a carabeaner or 2 and rope. They weigh about 5 ounces and are cheap. I Tie two together and wrap a nylon cord around each. That way it’s a good 60ft. Or could just put On snap ring and use a 2nd rod

Yeah, there's a lot of ways to make them. I like the carabiner idea. Simple is best, esp when we're talking snags and tangles.

 

U-tube. Great, customizable, design. Comfy too. Odd though, feeling worn out but not sore at the end of the day. A bit too much like a desk job.

Thanks. I tried several ways most involving chains and weights. The cbeaner was an on-the-water inspiration. To my knowledge, no one else has thought of it.

..but because it’s as wide an opening as it is it slips over most lures and lands right on the stuck hook. Works great

X2.  I have one like this that goes to 25ft. Only thing in boat that saved far more money than it cost. Broke similar old aluminum one and didnt bat an eye at spending $35 for a new one. 

Never had any good luck with the ones that attach to line myself.

Bait knockers dont work  unless you can get over the snag . In your case a pole is the best choice .When fishing from bank   I normally use inexpensive lures that dont hurt so much .

I fish from bank and started using the bow and arrow technique this year.  I have saved countless ned rigs, grubs, chatterbaits, and squarebills mastering this. Best of all, no equipment required! Look it up!

 

I agree with @scaleface that having a telescopic pole as a back up would be the most practical tool from the shore.

They work. You have to pop the kocker up and over on semi-slack line and move laterally to then pull the retriever back. With the cbeaner thing which is sort of a kocker but not exactly the same, I get stuff free from shore 90% of the time

I have made my own and it works great. If I add up how much money I've lost with how many baits I've gotten loose from being snagged, I would say pushing $200. I made it last year.

I made my own using a 4 oz saltwater weight, big split ring  & a big snap swivel. Attach the split ring to the weight, then the ring end of the snap swivel to the split ring. Then just place the snap over your line & let it go. It usually knocks the bait loose on the first drop. If it doesn't, a few jiggles of the rod tip will bounce the weight against your  bait. You can also tie a length of nylon rope to the split ring to manually pull the weight up & let it slide down again. Including rope, you can make it for $5.00.

I used to make my own out of *** oz weight and put a snap on them but would always lose atleast 3 a year. I recently picked up a bass pro plug knocker for $10

Other thing you can try is just cut bait and tie a bobber or float or even a soda bottle on and just let the current bring it up or come back for it later.

Sorry, I wish i could tell you, but all the labels have long worn off, and i cant remember anytging on it.  Im not sure its even made anymore. 18' are the longest ive seen too now. I picked mine up over 10 years ago now. Store i bought it at quit selling fishing gear 8 or 9 years ago too. 

 

I can tell you the ones at bps are just like it, but with one less extention.
