Super User burrows Posted April 26, 2018 Super User Posted April 26, 2018 5/0 or 4/0 for the 5 inch caffeine shads. EWG Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted April 26, 2018 Super User Posted April 26, 2018 This is all you need for the 5 inch Caffeine Shad - a 4/0, 3/32 oz. Fantastic action, especially on the fall: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Owner_Weighted_Twistlock_Light_3pk/descpage-OWTL.html 1 Quote
Super User burrows Posted April 26, 2018 Author Super User Posted April 26, 2018 I been using 4/0 which is what I always use with super flukes but with the caffeine Shad I been missing bites seems like a lot of plastic for a thicker bait also I noticed the five inch caffeine Shad is a little longer than the five inch super flukes. I’m on the late train with the late train with the caffeine shads. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted April 26, 2018 Super User Posted April 26, 2018 Check out Jason Sealock on *** video... talks about how the Owner has good hook up ratio. Apparently it’s the only hook Gary Yamamoto uses on his Senkos... I don’t know... it just seems to work for me on a lot of plastics but especially the Caffeine Shad. My daughter too, who is 90 pounds and doesn’t exactly set the hook very hard... 2 Quote
riverbasser Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 I've used both sizes but normally use 5/0. I haven't had any issues with hook ups on the 5 in, now the 7 in are massive and I've missed some bites. Most of the time they really choke these things for me. 1 Quote
puddlepuncher Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Funny I've been sitting on a few packs of these for over a year. Took them out this morning and absolutely killed them with these weightless with a 3/0 ewg hook. I've gone up to a 4/0 but they got torn apart quicker. My hook up ratio was excellent today. They sure cast a mile and skip like nothing else. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 26, 2018 Super User Posted April 26, 2018 On 4" soft jerkbaits I use a 2/0 and on a 5" model I use a 4/0. I found the Owner Twist Lock Light (GYCB designed Senko hook) is the absolute best hook for soft jerkbaits. I use a lot of different brand hooks for different things, I'm a big fan of Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp hooks as well as Mustad, and VMC and the reason I mention this is because I want you to know I'm not a hook snob. Some anglers will only use high end hooks and that is fine, I'm not that guy but I cn tell you that I've tried a lot of different hooks for soft jerkbaits and there is nothing that beats the Twist Lock Light. It isn't a light wire hook, it is medium wire but very strong and it isn't really an EWG hook but it has a wider gap than a wide gap round bend hook. I got 1 pack to try a few years back and after 1 day of fishing with a good fluke bite I went and bought a bunch more in each size, I honestly believe there is no better soft jerkbait hook on the market from any other brand. 1 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted April 26, 2018 Super User Posted April 26, 2018 I use these guys for flukes of all sorts. It puts the weight further back into the fluke and makes them fall a little flatter and they seem to rise up less when worked. 2 hours ago, smalljaw67 said: I found the Owner Twist Lock Light (GYCB designed Senko hook) is the absolute best hook for soft jerkbaits. I love these hooks for a lot of things, but I prefer a non-twistlock hook for flukes most of the time. The Owner twist locks do let me do a neat trick when the bass are just smacking at my lures. I take the hook point and just skin hook the point on the side of the plastic where any pressure will pop it free. The hooks are so light that being a little offset does not seem to change the action most plastics either. Quote

Similar to a VMC "Drop Dead" hook developed by Davey Hite - that 3/0 ~ 4/0 range in 3/32nd oz. would be a neat deal with a caffeine shad , super fluke and senko to cast out , give it a couple of twitches up top then let it sink and flutter to the bottom (If it makes it (lol) . Lead Head Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 Been running these on a jika rig with a 4/0 this year with great success. I'm finding I love the versatility of a swimbait on a jika rig. Straight retrieve, hopping, twitching, burning, dead sticking and of course initial fall have all produced fish. 2 Quote
