Sharkicane Posted April 25, 2018 Posted April 25, 2018 Hey all, I ordered my first bait caster a KastKing Assassin. It has the dual brakes on it. I have gathered a lot of information via reading and watching videos on baitcasters. I am really just looking for confirmation that I’ve understood everything I’ve read and watched correctly. Initial set up is pin brakes, tension knob, then mag brakes. Once I get it set up going forward when switching to a different weight lures I just need to turn the mag brakes off, adjust the tension knob, tune mag brakes back up. Then I can leave the pin brakes set until I get more comfortable? Quote
Beetlebz Posted April 25, 2018 Posted April 25, 2018 A good place to start is with the internal and external brakes up all the way and spool tension set just tight enough so the spool doesn't shift side to side. You won't cast very far but you shouldn't backlash as long as you stop the spool when the lure touches down. Dial back the external brakes little by little, once you're comfortable you can set external brakes back to max and then the internal brakes down 1. Repeat. Eventually you'll find a happy medium where your skill with a baitcaster and the lure or plug you're using is casting at its max without the spool becoming unruly. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Once you get comfortable with the brake system figuring out what settings for what lures and conditions comes pretty quick. Quote
papajoe222 Posted April 25, 2018 Posted April 25, 2018 I only own one reel with dual braking and I use it for very similar lures, so I don't touch either. I just check the tension adjustment for each lure and only adjust the magnetics if the wind picks up. 1 Quote
