Alright guys, I haven’t really fished much since I was a little kid so I’m getting into it a lot here lately and I went out and bought a nice baitcaster and rod. I need to build a tackle box from ground up, what are some lures that every Bass Fisherman should have in their tackle box? And also where is a good place to order things online? (Only have a Wal-Mart near me)

Many people would say tackle warehouse but for starters i would just go to your walmart.

1. booyah pad crasher frog natural color (other brands work too but not quite as well)

2. some senkos(yum dingers are much more affordable)

3. a couple chatterbaits white and black/blue

4. some jigs in black/blue and green pumpkin 3/8oz

5. black buzzbait

There are just some suggestions.  Good luck and welcome to Bass Resource!:)

Agree, first thing I would start with is plastic worms and craws, I love Zoom (Trick worm, finesse worm in watermelon colors) products.  Also will need hooks, Worm and Extra Wide Gap hooks, 3/0 is a good overall size.

Hit eBay and buy every Dancin' Eel you see.

Not really.

Do not do that.

Grab some bullet weights for Texas rigging, and a bag of beads and swivels for Carolina rigging.

Yea before you know it you'll have 3 tackle boxes and two totes..  10 rods and 3 water crafts.. then the question will be ... How did I get all this stuff .. and what do I need ?

All of it. You need all of it.

I good base for starting IMO

1. 3/0 EWG worm hooks for Texas rig and 1/0 weedguard hooks for wacky rig with plastic worms of your choosing (senkos, yum dingers, zoom)

2. Some Rat-l-traps (or other lipless crankbaits) in craw color and depending on location either a shad or bluegill imitation.

3. Squarebill crankbaits same colors as #2

I know people on here love Tackle Warehouse but really depending on where you live that’s not the most economical. I’m fortunate enough to live near a cabelas, Scheels, and numerous sporting goods stores with large lure selections. I only order lures if they are on sale.

Something to cover top, middle and bottom of water column.

1.  Top:  popper, Jitterbugs,  frogs, toads, spooks, buzzbaits, weightless floating worms, etc

2.  Middle:  swimbaits, spinnerbait, crank bait, grubs, swimming worms (U vibe), etc

3.  Bottom:  worms, jigs, grubs, Senko, etc

Or you could just go midwest finesse, but not with a BC combo.

Don't buy everything.   Learn a few techniques.   I àm partial to plastic baits. IMHO you can start with some offset round worm hooks and some trickworms, U vibe worms and floating worms. You only need a few colors.  I am partial to Junebug and dark colors on bottom, white on mid column.  Not sure color matters on top.

Of course, I now have boxes of all kinds of crap.

I think the most easily overlooked thing starting out is to match your gear with your technique.  Read all of the articles and watch the videos.

Walmart usually carries some zoom worms and booyah products.  Also, order from Sieberts.  Good quality and fantastic service.  Welcome to BR.

I just happened to hit our local Walmart this past weekend and saw Z-Man bladed jigs in four colors, the aforementioned BooYah, Zoom, and Yum products, and various sizes and colors of StrikeKing spinnerbaits. Not a large selection of jigs, but some basic jig offerings. Almost forgot to mention a fair selection of plugs. And all this in a small town in western Massachusetts - hardly a bass-fishing Mecca!

Just my opinion, but when I got back into fishing on a budget, I could have outfitted my first tackle bag at Walmart (except for my favorite hooks) ... even had the required tungsten worm weights and some decent line selections.

As many of the guys suggested above, ya might want to sit down and figure out just which type(s) of fishing grabs your interest before you start. I always was a soft-bait enthusiast ... well, until I found this site and was introduced to the evil Bait Monkey. Try not to get carried away ... focus on a couple of techniques.

Personal favorite mail-order stores are BioSpawn (love their Exosticks and Vilecraws), Z-Man (bladed jigs and all kinds of good, tough, buoyant soft plastic stuff), Tackle Warehouse (for me a great source of terminal tackle and line conditioner although they have everything), and Siebert (great for required tungsten jigs).  Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone for all the replies and advice! I am Going to my local Walmart and pick up a few top lures and worms and see how that works out for me, then I’ll try a few other techniques.

No idea where you are at in NC, but IIRC, if you're in the east, you can't go five miles on any highway without running into a bait shop/tackle shop.  Prices might be better on line, but the advice you get will be worth far more than those savings.   I, too, highly recommend tacklewarehouse *.  You might find sale price on individual items lower elsewhere at times, but the free shipping and selection will blow any online competitor away.  And as you build your box, keep in mind that you really can/should try to keep it simple.....it only takes a few visits to BR before you find yourself filling online shopping carts every day....plastic worms, flukes and a couple creatures, weights, hooks, spinnerbait, pliers, line, nippers/clippers/knife, couple crankbaits, rattletrap and a jig....start there and you can accomplish most everything.

Walmart will have every basic lure you need, Dicks Sporting Goods or Academy will have a better selection and Tackle Warehouse the best selection. As for lures to put in a starter kit. Texas rigged plastics, and 1/2oz tandem spinnerbaits is a good place to start. Good Luck !
