Line for froggin'

Going frog fishing today but I used up the last of my braid yesterday... Will 14 pound Stren monofilament work? I'm going to be using a Pad Crasher Jr. in open water. I know heavy braid is usually necessary because of the cover, and size of the frog, but will the 14lb mono work under these conditions? Thanks.

Cover is just one reason I use braid for frogs.  Perhaps the bigger reason, for me, is that it doesn't stretch.  When I first tried frogs, I used line other than braid and it was nothing but frustration.  I clearly remember that morning....more than a dozen impressive blow-ups and ZERO hook-ups.

Yeah, I definitely prefer braid now that I've used it. But just for line strength, would it be sufficient?

It was more than strong enough for me.  Since I didn't hook up, it was plenty strong.

 I guess I'll try it today and hope it doesn't break. I've heard that the breaking strengths are usually higher than advertised...

Or, you could get some braid....or fish something with thinner hooks.  Sorry to be a smartazz, but if it were me and I was headed to froggy water without braid, I'd be throwing flukes or rage bugs or worms on lighter wire hooks.   I just wouldn't have any confidence that I could effectively fish a frog on that line.

Yeah, are there any lures that work better with mono than with with braid/flouro? I could try a crankbait, or spinnerbait or something.

Short answer, yes, but not very well.  Just buy some more braid.

Anything heavy will work. PowerPro 50# will work better.

Agreed on the braid. 

 

No stretch = more hook ups 

 

My casting distance is always better with braid too.

Buy more braid ASAP but if you are going out again before that is possible, and you are truly open water fishing, and have a decently stout rod, I think you can probably land a few. I'd expect a pretty horrendous strike to land ratio though.

I'm leaning towards just using something else until I can get more braid. Any suggestions for a lure?

I actually prefer mono for buzzbaits. Sometimes with braid I react too fast and the pull the bait away from the fish or they get the bait and since braid doesn't stretch I tear a big hole in their mouth. That little bit of stretch with mono helps me get more hookups with the buzzers.

 

I agree with everyone else on frogs though. 50lb Power pro.

I mean you said you were fishing open water so maybe some kind of spook or popper style lure if you want to stick with topwater. I rarely if ever use a frog in open water anyways.

I only use braid for frog fishing. Not saying you can't use other lines, but it's not ideal and you're going to miss some fish. And I agree with what the reel ess said. If you're going to use mono, then use the line no less than 50#.

Use something with treble hooks.  There are plenty of top waters besides frogs.  Poppers, spooks, Jitterbugs, Devilshorse, etc
