YaknBassn Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 Guys, I'm in the market for new sonar unit. I really want something with Downscan/Sonar and GPS capabilities. I've narrowed it down to two units, Humminbird Helix 5 G2S or Lowrance Hook2 5 Splitshot. Id just like to know some pros and cons of each, which has more useful upgrades, and which one you guys that are more experienced with sonar recommend. Quote
sully420 Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 There both good. Its like chevy vs ford or diawa vs shimano. You just have to play with them at the store and see whats mor comfortable. 1 Quote

There is zero real difference between the two (or any other major brand)...what makes the difference is if the menus make sense to you so you can find the stuff you're paying money for. Humminbird makes sense to me, I have friends who love Lowrance and Garmin...they all work great. If you are linking to a trolling motor, there's some incentive to go one way or the other, but again, it's really preference. ...I'd compare the difference more to Mac vs. Windows rather than Chevy/Ford...but I'm a sports car guy at heart and neither really makes one... Super User WRB Posted April 25, 2018 Super User Posted April 25, 2018 Both brands are good. Carl Lowrance started the fresh water recreational sonar business and Tom Mann started Hummingbird with the Super Sixty flasher specifically for bass fishing market. Both Carl and Tom are long gone, companies sold and operated by large business with broad ranging interest. Sonar comes down to target separation, fish from background, ease of operation and ease of seeing the sonar images in all weather and lighting conditions....both companies are good. It comes down to your budget, product support/customer service and your skills. Today I wouldn't go smaller then 7" diagonal screen. Look closely at side scanning, the transducers size, mounting and recommended location. Traditional down scan look at Chirp units, advantage in target separation from background clutter. Tom Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 25, 2018 Super User Posted April 25, 2018 Feature for feature, Lowrance is on the pricier side. I prefer menu layout on H'Bird. You could also look at Garmin 63CV. Quote
