Reel Question (Brakes)

So I finally got to go out and test my curado K yesterday! I was very surprised at how smooth it was but had to turn on 2 of the four brakes (while keeping magnetic brakes on 3).  For a majority of my reels I have either no brakes or 1 brake on with similar baits and line.  So I thought do different companies have different standards when it comes to brakes? 

 

This is my first "higher end" Shimano reel and had some solid backlashes the first few casts when I speed up the cast before turning on brake #2.  Once it was on, no issues after that- just was curious about other reels.

There are no standards when it comes to brakes.  It's trial and error, and user ability.

Sorry.  Can't help you.  You are already a better caster than I am.    I don't run my centrifugal brakes with less than 2 on.

I figured as much-  Made me feel better about my purchase and worse about my older equipment.

Does it really matter if you can cast either fine?  There's a reason there's buttons and knobs - they're adjustable.

I had super slick braid on too. So it definitely would have been worse with mono/floro.  I definitely think the reels are a huge variable.

I run 2 on my Curado as well.

I have two brakes on on every Shimano reel I own (back to my Curado 100Bs)and that seems to be the sweet spot for me. On the newer Shimano Curados and Chronarchs with the exterior dial, it is either on 2 or 3.  I have noticed that the Chronarch MGL and the Curado K requires a tighter cast control than the others, but does not effect casting distance, which in my case is not a mile because I am grass bed oriented and you do not want the bait too far away fishing heavy grass beds..

This ^^^ curado K don't have magnatic just a fine tune for centrifugal brake. Now you have other reel at one or no break but 2 on curado K, I believe that your old one might not get a good free spin or spool bearing need to be cleaned.

I too have 2 brakes on most of Shimano reels but only curado 70 and scorpion 70 that i set at 3 becuz I use a lot of light lure and that help eliminate over run, I did loose some distance but not by much.

Before I got into maintaining my reels properly I thought I was an accomplished caster.  It's amazing what clean bearings and spool shaft will do to humble you.

I will use 2 on and 2 off as well, sometimes I use 1 on and 3 off. It depends on the conditions and the lure.

My 1st baitcasting reel didn't have breaks or bearing, it did have a spool end cap to adjust tension. Langley Lure Cast 330, light weight aluminum spool and end plates, the reel only held 50 yards of 12 lb braid. With 1/2 lures could cast all 50 yards of line under all types of fishing conditions. How? Learn to use your thumb, set the brakes a light as possible.
