I am about to purchase a new reel for topwater frogs but im torn on which gear ratio. I know you want a high gear ratio but im not sure if 7.5:1 or 8.3:1. I wanted to get some opinions if 8.3:1 may be too fast or if it has worked good for anyone.

Thanks

You are talking about a difference of about 8 turns of the handle on a 35 yd cast (yes I've done the math and accounted for the spool diameter difference at the start and end of the cast), assuming the same spool dimensions, and about 3s @ 3 turns per second when trying to quickly get the lure in for another cast at that distance.  The differences are pretty negligible.  So, unless you are spooling the reel with every cast, fishing a very small target zone, and burning it back, it really doesn't matter.

I have used 6.3:1 in the past, now I have a 7.1:1 but I plan on going 8.1:1 when I buy a dedicated frog rod just so I can crank in line fast. Other than that, it doesn't really matter. You're going to cast the frog out there, move it a little and let it sit or walk it back slow which doesn't require a fast reel.

I threw frogs on my 7.3:1 Zillion TWS last year and loved it.  I'm throwing them on my 8.5:1 Curado K this year and like it more.  The speed really allows you to cover more water.
