Matt_3479 Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 What gear ratio do you prefer for frogging? Do you use the same for other topwaters or do you like a slower for topwaters like spook JR, hula poppers, jitterbugs and such? What reel do you use? Going to try my daiwa zillion rod for frogs and topwater. Little light so it will be used for more open water and light cover frogging. Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted April 17, 2018 Super User Posted April 17, 2018 For regular topwaters like poppers, stick baits, plopper etc, I use 6.3 ratio. But for frog fishing in the slop, I like 7.2/7.3. If a bass blows up on my bait and I miss it, I wanna be able to get that frog back to that spot as soon as possible. So the faster ratio allows me to get the frog back to the boat faster, ready for another cast. Quote
Matt_3479 Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 Awesome thanks! I’m probably going grab the faster gear ratio as I have another rod I might be able to throw topwaters on and it’s got a 6.3:1. Debating between another tatula sv, another Curado K or maybe a reel from a company unable to be spoken of lol. 22lbs of drag sounds nice for frogs Quote
sdsc357 Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I use 6.3 to 7.1 for topwater lures like sammy, spook, gunfish, etc.. not the real big ones (over 1 oz lures). My rod is a 7' med with mod fast tip, 30 lb braid. Quote
Dtrombly Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 7.1:1 minimum for me, I use an 8.1:1 right now Quote
optimator Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 This is my first season with a dedicated slop rod. I went with a Daiwa Fuego CT 8.1 Quote
