Newbie tackle?

Hello all

 

I am limited to shore fishing and mostly use a pflueger president spinning combo and wading into baitcasters. I have a lot of upground reservoirs, large ponds, lake erie and its tributaries around me and mainly interested in largemouth and small mouth. Some of the rivers and ponds can be kind of murky so ive ready I should use a chartrues chatter bait with round blades but I'm not sure on weight to get? Most of the reservoirs have rip rap, the lake has marinas and break walls and rocks and the rivers are mostly deep murky stuff. 

 

Any tips on what baits to buy in color, type, weight and what rod to fish them on?

Green pumpkin senkos and 3/0 ewg hooks. For a chatterbait I’d recommend a 1/4 oz since you’re throwing it on a spinning rod, when you get into a baitcaster I’d step up to a 1/2 oz, everyone has their favorites, I like my siebertoutdoors chatterbait.

Your rod should say on it somewhere what lure weight range is best for it, usually right above the reel . The max is probably around 1/2oz.   If you want to fish a chatterbait or spinnerbait, stick to 1/4oz, as they are actually heavier than listed, especially when you put a trailer on them. Bigger ones will also have heavier hooks that are better suited for heavier baitcasting rods.

 

If you just want a get a small variety of newbie tackle to cover the bases for starters, and that you could fish well on your spinning rod, I would get these 5 rigs:

1. 3" or 4" curly tail grubs & 1/8oz ball jig heads

2. Wacky rig: 5" senko or other stick worm and finesse/wacky hooks

3. Texas rig: 6" or 7" striaght tail or ribbon-tail worm, 1/8oz bullet weights, and 3/0 worm hooks

4. 1/4oz spinnerbait

5. A 1/4oz top water popper like the Rebel Pop-R or Booyah Boss Pop

I have the 7ft 2 piece with 10-12lbs yellow mono line on it.

Pack of zoom trick worms, watermelon with chartreuse tail, and a pack of 4/0 round bend off set worm hooks. Rig in Texas style with a 1/8-3/16oz bullet weight. Drag it, hop it, swim it, let it free fall, it will get some bites. 

 

Pack of zoom fat albert 5" curly tail grubs, white in colour, pack of 2/0 ewg hooks and those bullet weights from above. Texas rig it and hop it or swim it. 

Works anywhere. 

 

Pack of zman TRDs, black and blue, and a pack of zman 1/20-1/10 oz jig heads. Rig it up and slowly drag it or hop it. Works amazing. 

 

Mepps agila in line spinners, #4 in gold colour. Use some snap swivels or your line will twist and be a disaster.

Well I hope my research today paid off. 

 

1/4oz z man chatterbait in black and blue for muddy water. 1/4oz z man chatterbait in white with flake for clear water. 1/4oz booya spinner bait in chatruse/white with the leaf blades. I also have some hooks and senkos in those colors you guys listed. 

 

How do you guys feel about creature baits throwing around docks and pier walls?

Those sound like great places to throw those baits. Creature baits can be money at times.

I am kinda in the same spot you are when I started bass fishing about a year ago. I fish a murkey, greenish, brown water. 

 

I would pick up some rattletraps (back/red for darker water) , Walmart $1 spinner and buzz baits (yellow/red skirt) (made by strike king btw). Rebel topwater lures like a Popper R and a Frog Top water and a frog hulu popper.

For me, the most basic bass catchers are:

 

3" Yum Grubs in small packs from Walmart, any color will work, white seems basic to me.  Use small ball heads or if you find them, Zman Shroomz heads (my Walmart carries them).

 

Zoom trick worm (again, pick any color, I use a lot of white and various green colors, but I don't believe there are bad ones out there).  Use 2/0 worm hooks (the heavy wire "superline" hooks would not be my top choice), plus some 1/8 oz worm weights.

 

I would add those.

Fishing from shore your tackle should be limited to what you can carry and present lures effectively with.

You have a spinning outfit, medium power and fast action? Model numbers help.

You can effectively fish several soft plastics using your spinning out and a few lighter weight lures.

Spinning; 

1. Finesse C-rig or what I call slip shot rig. Size 1/0 Owner Down shot hook #5133, 1/8 oz Mojo cylinder weight, 8 mm faceted glass bead and Carolina stopper. Rig: weight 1st, bead 2nd, Carlonia stopper 3rd about 24" up from the hook, hook 4th usecPalmar knot.

Soft plastics; 4 1/2" to 6" finesse curl tail or straight tail worms like Roboworms rigged weedless.

2. 5" Skinny Senko rigged wacky with Owner #5172 weedless wacky hook, Palomar knot.

3. Inline spinner like #4 1/8 oz Panther Martin in Fire Tiger color.

4. Original Rapala minnow F13 silver black back.

I would start with your spinning outfit and learn the above 4 lures and presentations before taking on a baitcasting outfit. 

This gives you 2 reaction lures and 2 bottom contact lures to perfect and all are proven bass catchers everywhere.

Yes its a medium/fast cabelas tourney trail 7ft rod with a pflueger president medium size reel with 12lbs mono.

12 lb mono may not be the best choice, too large diameter with high memory, good for a bait casting reel. Take a look at 8 lb (.009d) or 10 lb (.010d) Sunline Super Natural mono, reasonable price premium line.

I have yet to find a wrong place to throw creature baits. Smallie beavers and baby brush hogs in green pumkin are my first choice. Honestly I have yet to find a creature bait that doesn't work.
