Super User Montanaro Posted April 14, 2018 Super User Posted April 14, 2018 Every spring I discover a dead deer or two in the water. Yesterday after work I went fishing and everyone was out fishing at a local WMA and everyone said that nobody has caught anything all day. I find a laydown with a deer carcass on it and catch 1 off the laydown and 2 others in the immediate vicinity. My thoughts are this; surely the carcass attracts crawdads by the boatload and henceforth bass. Is this a legitimate "pattern"? 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 14, 2018 Global Moderator Posted April 14, 2018 All kinds of creatures are surely taking advantage of all the nutrients being released into the water, and bass are taking advantage of those scavengers. Quote
Super User Gundog Posted April 14, 2018 Super User Posted April 14, 2018 Much like rabbit's feet, the deer carcass is only lucky to you, not the deer. 2 Quote
RPreeb Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 When I was out scouting one of the lakes near here last month, found a dead cow floating against the shore. It was at the state park, so I called and reported it. I'm pretty sure that they don't leave anything that big to nature.... too much chance of really nasty germs getting into the water and possibly being contracted by kids playing along the shore. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 14, 2018 Super User Posted April 14, 2018 Off topic but the local hillbillies hang hog carcases off bridges . The flies lay eggs , maggots fall in the water creating an automatic fish feeder . In the bottom photo you can see the ripples in the water from the feeding fish . 2 1 4 Quote

That is just downright nasty (what the hillbillies do, that is)!! Obviously it works great, but DANG! This whole deer carcass thing reminds me of that scene in Dances With Wolves where he finds the dead deer in the water which is supposed to be his drinking/bathing/everything water. 2 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted April 15, 2018 Super User Posted April 15, 2018 That's disgusting but it doesn't surprise me they do that kind of stuff. I recently spent 6 days in rural areas of South Carolina and saw plenty of disgusting things there I don't see in South Florida or other areas I visited up north. The fishing was good though and was able to catch a bunch of fish such as Bartrams bass, smallmouth bass, Bartram's bass×Alabama spotted bass hybrid, blue catfish, and other species of fish. 1 Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 Clearly the deer was trying to swim across the water and a giant bass took it down. Think of the rod we are gonna need for the new topwater deer bait. 4 9 Quote

If you made your casts upwind or towards the tail of the deer, nothing. You had to be downwind and land the jig right next to the antlers. The smell was tough, but my new KVD non-stink buffs made it bearable." 1 2 Quote

BCline Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I can't wait to see the new Bass Fishing Regulation regarding "baiting". I wonder if the carcass has to be real or if a deer decoy would work. 1 Quote
RPreeb Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 The places I've fished, chumming for game fish has always been very much against the law. Using anything like that deliberately to attract bass would not fly with the authorities. Quote

Bassun Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 lol, missed my opportunity for that one liner Montanaro. I wouldn't be surprised to hear of local tournaments having scandalous baiting. They seem to do everything else, why not that... Quote
