Reacon Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 A question, when using the bait casting reel. Depress the button and let go when casting, or depress button and hold the line on the reel until casting then click the button to close the line from going out.. Hope you understand my question. cant seem to see this on the videos. Thanks, Bryan Quote

Depress the button and let go when casting, or depress button and hold the line on the reel until casting then click the button to close the line from going out.. Hope you understand my question. cant seem to see this on the videos. Thanks, Bryan Start by watching Glenn's instructional vedio's on how to cast a baitcasting reel. Your thumb is used to control the spool before, during and after the cast. The thumb bar or button as you referred to is used to release the spool so it turns freely, keep pushing down with the thumb as you release the spool to prevent the spool from spinning. The spool is released and you have thumb pressure on the spool, now you start your casting motion the rod swings back from a 10 o'clock rod tip position, then using your wrists and fore arm swing the rod tip foreward to about a 2 0'clock position releasing the thumb pressure about the 12 o'clock swing position while continuing your casting motion. Your thumb shouldn't be touching the spool during the time the lure is going out, it should be a fraction of a inch above the spooled line to keep the line smooth and as the lure begins to stop going foreward you simply stop the spool turning using your thumb, then start to turn the reel handle. Sounds complicated but it only takes a few hours practice to cast smoothly.. caution don't try to make longer casts until you have the timing down. Good luck, Tom PS, watch vedio's that show how to remove a backlash and how to adjust the spool tension knob. Quote
Reacon Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 Thank you WRB. I believe the saying, never to old to learn something new. I turn the ripe old age of 70 on the 21th of April. I fully understand your response to my question. I will try find the Glenn’s video. I’m sure I will have many backlash until I get the hang of it. Thanks Again, Bryan. 1 Quote

I have been to Bass Pro and purchased a new Bait Casting Combo plus a Spinning Outfit combo. Silly question to all you bass fishermen but what bait should I start with and also what is a fluke. Thanks, Bryan Hi Bryan, Welcome to the forum .... this is a great site and the Guys and Gals will get you on the right track. I see you are a New Brunswick native like myself. I live near St. George. Good luck with your new hobby, take it lightly and enjoy your retirement. And remember, there are no stupid questions ... ask away. Quote
Reacon Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 Thank you Log Catcher. Will have to look up a YouTube as what one would use these for. Someone gave them to me and had no idea what they were. 10 minutes ago, mattkenzer said: Hi Bryan, Welcome to the forum .... this is a great site and the Guys and Gals will get you on the right track. I have not fished Grand Lake ... been on the bucket list but haven't made it up there yet. It can get rough so make sure you play safe. Your four primary sport fish will be Landlock Salmon, Speckled Trout, Lake Trout and Smallmouth Bass. Pickerel will be plentiful as well and will be caught on your smallmouth tackle. Good luck Bryan and don't be afraid to ask questions on any of the above species. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 18, 2018 Super User Posted April 18, 2018 The twin tail grub is usually used as a jig trailer. The hollow tube or Gitzit is a good smallmouth soft plastic that can be rigged a few ways. The most popular is a inserting a round ball head jig inside the tube before tieing the jig onto the line, then push the hook eye through the front thin plastic and tie the jig on. You can either expose the hook or not, depends if you want it weedless. You can also drop shot rig a tube by nose hooking it. You can use both of these with the spinning tackle using 1/8-1/4 oz jigs or drop shot. Tom Quote

Thanks Again, Bryan. I'm 71 and just about as new to this type of fishing as you are. Look at the videos and articles on this site to find just about everything you will need to know about using a baitcaster. That's where I started, and really where I got the easiest to find and most useful information. How you set up your reel, and then fine tune your setup, depends on the brand and model of your reel, but Glenn's videos will get you started in the right direction. There are videos on how to select and use a baitcaster, how to select a rod, how to choose and use just about every type of bait or lure, how to read the weather and water to pick the likely spots to fish, and more. You can literally spend several hours watching videos and reading articles just here on Bass Resource, and all of the advice is good advice. Also, don't automatically reject what appears to be conflicting advice... sometimes both ideas are valid, despite their differences. Bass are notional critters. Two guys can be fishing from the same boat with completely different baits and techniques and still can both be catching fish. Another time they can both be using exactly the same thing and one is catching while the other is completely befuddled. Then if you don't get enough here at BR, You Tube will teach, confuse, and confound you. There is a full mix of good, mediocre, and poor information on You Tube, so watch with a few grains of salt. Thank you for your comments. I took my zodiac across the lake last year just to see how the boat reacted to the water. Lots of points and inlets where our camper is parked. Had another question(not fishing) every time I open BR. I’m faced with promo for a “You could win in a contest” sometimes annoying Quote

I assume that someone wins, but I've never seen anything about it. I have enough faith in Glenn to feel that it won't be anything that causes a problem. Quote
