Scatter Rap Scatter Lip

I was browsing the fishing isle and saw Scatter Raps featuring the Scatter Lip and was intrigued by both the lip and the diving depth, which was shown as 8ft.-13ft. (the CRC-07)  I always wondered why a bait company hadn't experimented with a concave lip on a crankbait. What really got to me was how short the lip is in relation to the running depth claim. Although wide, the lip isn't any longer than a 1.5 shallow runner.

Has anyone used these and if so, how much work is involved? That lip design and angle looks like it'll put my wrist to bed in short order.

I bought a couple (because they were on sale) and, disappointingly, they seem to have about the same action as dragging as a soggy cigar through the water.  It cannot be attributed to heavy line because I was using 6 lb hybrid line.  Anyway, they won't work you too hard.  Any jerkbait will wear you out first.

They work well but they don't take kindly to a fast retrieve.  They do have a very erratic retrieve with no input from the angler.

That’s harsh ?. I’ve done fairly well with them for bass and smaller pike here the last couple summers. Not my first choice to throw but in shallow water the random sway seems to do alright, especially around lay downs and over open weedbeds. To each their own I suppose.

Yup that is harsh but that’s my opinion my apologies.

A rapala knot makes a big difference for the better on balsa baits

I dont have one but noticed they were in the clearance bins pretty fast .

They scatter crank has been really good to me and have even fished it in moderate current and bounced it off rocks with no issues at all. You just can’t fish it fast, even saw one bring a nice musky to the boat only to turn off at the last second. 

 

I think the thing catches fish, but it was so different many won’t even try it, and that is why the thing ended up in clearence bins. Think the cranking rap, also fell to a similar issue, because it was a plastic bait produced by Rapala so it couldn’t be good right)

Scatter Crank is the one to get. It hunts and catches fish well. Other styles are not so good.

 

As with all cranks they dont run as deep as advertised for me.

I'm not a big crankbait guy, but the Scatter Rap has been more of an open water bait where it can "deflect" without actually hitting anything. That sudden directional change has resulted in some pretty violent strikes.

This is an experienced summary (regardless if he caught fish, I can tell  by his statement about retrieve speed ) and I agree 100 percent. You can play with the retrieve and get them kicking out sideways pretty decent with just a slightly faster rotation of the reel. 

 

They catch bass.  I've caught a few nice ones on the scatter rap shad.. one time using the regular scatter rap pulled 3 in a row out of the same hole.

 

Blueback herring and yellow perch are my best colors.

I got the bluegill pattern crank on a good deal and threw it in a variety of conditions all last year. Looks great going through the water. Exaggerated hunting action, working it fast it makes it roll and skip up in a way I thought looked somewhat like a fleeing baitfish. I've caught a total of one fish on it. ?

If they made a tiny version it would be a great crappie bait in the summer.

The kicker is it turned off 7 feet from the boat, father in law had the scatter rap, I tossed a RES where I thought it went and hooked up and landed a low 40” musky. We were in 5 feet of gin clear water so I am sure the musky saw the boat and turned off.

I found one of these things. I think it's the scatter rap shad. Paint is chipped off and it sinks like a rock. Is it supposed to float?

Yea, it's balsa. And is very buoyant.

I could see it was balsa since a lot of the paint was gone, so I assumed it was supposed to float. That's why I was surprised when I gave it a try and it sank like a rock. I guess it was waterlogged.

 

The paint/coating on that thing is really thick, like some kind of plastic. I think I'll repaint it and give it a few coats of spar varnish just as a curiosity project.
